I am a tenured Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Department of Forensic Science. My Laboratory for Forensic Toxicology Research (LFTR) is currently working on electronic cigarettes, describing how they work and are used to consume drugs other than nicotine (DOTN's). Ultimately, the work has informed addiction treatment specialists, educators, law enforcement, probation/parole officers, medical examiners, forensic toxicologists, and crime labs as to the nature of e-cigarettes. This work is funded by the National Institute of Justice. I have helped policy makers make science-based decisions about vaping. We also evaluate the adulteration of CBD products which have created a rash of poisonings nationwide of innocent people. We are currently exposing the nature of how the cannabis industry is evolving, especially in states that have not provided access to legal adult-use retail cannabis products. This includes the characterization of Delta-8, THC-O, THC-P, exo-THC, and other synthetic cannabinoids. I have testified to the FDA about how the lack of regulations for this industry has led to questionable quality assurance of products and jeopardized public safety and public health.I am also collaborating on several other exciting research projects. One is to help develop an addiction liability model for novel psychoactive substances that are current challenges in the forensic toxicology community. The other is to develop a predictive tool to know whether or not a newborn baby will have withdrawal symptoms if they are born to women who have struggled with drug addiction.I am also the CEO of Cardinal Quality Laboratories, a 3rd party independent group who consults for cannabis quality assurance for the medical marijuana and adult-use retails industries. My team has decades of experience in method validation on multiple platforms: GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, HPLC, and GC-FID. We have hundreds of peer-reviewed manuscripts and presentations talking about methods to advance the scientific foundation of processes on which decisions are made.
