Hired by the King County Sheriff's Office in 1990, Michelle served in a number of capacities until her selection as police chief in 2004. Michelle worked as an officer, detective, school resource officer, field training officer, crime scene specialist, patrol sergeant, community policing sergeant, field training sergeant, civil disobedience team leader, and detective sergeant until her police chief assignments began. For full bio: See belowMichelle Bennett held a variety of progressive leadership assignments within the Sheriff’s Office. Most notably, from 2004-2014, she was the Chief of Police for the City of Maple Valley Police Department, and from 2016 to 2019, she was the Chief of Police for the City of Sammamish. Michelle retired in February 2021 as a Major. In March of 2021, Michelle was selected as the interim and later permanent chief for the City of Edmonds,From 2019-2020, Michelle was the President of the King County Chief’s Association. She has sat on many advisory committees, most recently on the Shoreline Community College and Central Washington University Criminal Justice Advisory Committees. In the past she was selected as the Central Washington University Westside Alumni of the year. Michelle has also served as the elected Alumni Representative for the Northwestern University Alumni Association. Since 2018, Michelle has served as the FBINAA Washington State Executive Board President.Michelle has been teaching anti-bullying and cyber-bullying classes for workplaces, colleges, government organizations and secondary schools and parent since 2001. Michelle has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and Justice, a Master of Science Degree in the field of Psychology / Organizational Development and Behavior, and a Doctorate in Education (Dissertation topic was on bullying), with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction. She is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, Session 235, and of the FBI National Academy, Session 247.

Promoted in 2008 as a KCSO Captain, Captain Bennett has held the positions of Operations Captain of a Precinct, Administrative Captain of a Precinct, and Chief of Police for the City of Maple Valley (10 years total as Chief), and Headquarters Administrative Captain supervising/overseeing the Civil Unit, the Property Management Unit including Evidence and Quartermaster, the Records Unit, the Contracting Unit, the Data Unit and coordinating for the King County Sheriff's Office Fleet and Facilities.

Management Experience: Work closely with city leadership familiarity with budgets, contracting models, memos to council, writing ordinances, presenting agenda items at council meetings, and representing the city in all forums as a dedicated professional. By providing and utilizing strong, collaborative goal oriented leadership, operational necessities are created and implemented effectively and efficiently. Officer safety, serving the community and reducing crime and disorder should be concepts embraced by all members of our police department. Experienced Community Leader: A strong community oriented focus is necessary in any police department. The police department is an important member of that community focus. By working together with community groups, the city and police department enjoy the ability to address community problems in a collaborative way.
