As this position is associated with the athletic department, I am a tutor specifically for student-athletes but not specifically for one course. Students come to me for help in a wide variety of classes; all levels of calculus, linear algebra, physics, biology, circuits, mechanics, and some upper level biomedical engineering courses.

The Khalil Lab combines biology with engineering to work on a variety of different synthetic biology projects. Working with my graduate student mentor, our goal is to be able to change the behavior of a cell by targeting certain genes and swapping them with ones that code for proteins of our choice. I mainly work on the wet-lab portions of our project.

The project I worked on was on the interface of labs in the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. My focus was to create a model that mimics in vivo tumor behavior by growing cancer cell lines in 3D using microfabricated pillars and controlled oxygenation in a bioreactor. This involved tissue.

The BOT lab is developing a clinical device to measure cancer patients' tumors in real time and in a non-invasive and non-ionizing way. I have been working with the Benchtop DOS (diffuse optical spectroscopy) system to test and analyze potential technologies to use in this device.

I prepared samples of all kinds for further testing and analysis. I also extensively logged analysis information in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. I was also tasked with organizing the lab's virtual collection of scholarly journal articles.

I handled the technology involved in downloading movies and trailers into the projectors, and then build the movies up so they could be played. Towards the end of my time there, I learned some of the management tasks, like balancing the registers at the end of the night. I also sold tickets and concessions.
