I'm a Consulting Engineer, interested in the development of holistic building engineering solutions I've taken part in developing of a thriving consultancy practice (BuroHappold Engineering) and am currently teaching at Imperial College and working with Seratech ltd, a start up focussing on zero carbon concrete solutions. After graduating from Cambridge in 1977 I worked with Ted Happold and Frei Otto on a range of membrane and cable net structures. I joined a newly–formed research group at Bath University (School of Architecture and Building Engineering), undertaking research and development into air-supported structures (1977 to 1982). I got a PhD in 1983. At BuroHappold I worked as a structural engineer first in Bath and then in London, helping create a thriving design group and then becoming Director responsible for the development of Building Engineering within BuroHappold world-wide.Past projects include the British Museum in London, ExCeL in London, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Smithsonian Museum in Washington, an Winspear Opera House in Dallas and the pyramid of Peace in Astana, main railway terminus in Dresden, new HQ tower for National Bank of Kuwait and Khan Shatyr leisure complex in Kazakhstan. In 2011 I became Senior Partner/Chairman of BuroHappold Engineering - an international firm of consulting engineers working in the built environment with some 20 office world-wide.I have a particular interest in the connection between natural structures and man-made structures, born of my early days with Ted Happold and Frei Otto. I am also interested in the education of our future generations of engineers and teach Creative Design at Imperial College.In 2019 I instigated the UK Structural Engineers Declaration of Climate and Biodiversity Emergency, since when I have been working with IStructE, RAEng, UKBEAG and Built Environment Declares to build better understanding of how Built Environment professionals can help the transformation to a regenerative economy. As part of this I am currently working with Seratech ltd, a start up at Imperial College focussed on zero-carbon concrete solutions.
