If you have been active in the North American utility IT/automation markets over the last 30+ years, chances are that you have subscribed to a publication, read a research report, or attended an industry event that was developed, launched, or managed by Mike Smith. Mike is a 34-year veteran of the utility ‘smart grid’/IT/automation, information services and media business, and is currently Principal Consultant at KLN Group, a consultancy that he leads, and is a Principal with the Utility 2030 Collaborative. Immediately prior to launching KLN Group. he was an Industry Principal at SAS, where he was involved in client engagement, thought leadership, and business development activities to drive growth of the SAS utilities business. Prior to joining SAS, Mike was Vice President, Sales & Marketing at E Source. He was previously held executive roles with Energy Central, including Vice President & Co-Founder, Utility Analytics Institute; where was responsible for product development, business development, and growth of the division; and Vice President of Sierra Energy Group, the research and analysis division of Energy Central. Previously he has led initiatives that have been at the forefront of utility technology developments, including founding the industry’s first publication (known today as Power Grid International) and leading numerous research and forum initiatives.
