As an officer, I led teams of 40-90 people in austere and hazardous conditions. The most important and rewarding part of the job was mentoring and guiding the development of leaders with wildly varying backgrounds and skills. In the later years of my career, I worked to create and implement plans for large and complex operations, involving a huge array of resources. Seeing those plans through to completion often involved reacting to sudden changes and complications in a way that furthered long-term organizational goals.I gained extensive public speaking experience in briefing senior commanders, issuing orders to subordinates, giving presentations to outside organizations, and instructing adult learners.
