I worked my way up from a rifleman to Company Second in Command, responsible for the administration of up to 135 soldiers. As an officer, I led teams of 40-90 people in austere and hazardous conditions. The most important and rewarding part of the job was mentoring and guiding the development of leaders with wildly varying backgrounds and skills. In the later years of my career, I worked to create and implement plans for large and complex operations, involving a huge array of resources. Seeing those plans through to completion often involved reacting to sudden changes and complications in a way that furthered long-term organizational goals.I gained extensive public speaking experience in briefing senior commanders, issuing orders to subordinates, giving presentations to outside organizations, and instructing adult learners. My responsibilities included the usual low-level drudgery that gets assigned to law students, as well as working with some of Toronto's finest lawyers on some interesting projects. It was here that I got a good grounding in the basics of business transactions, negotiation, and how government policy affects business.
