I am a Communications Specialist at SAS working as a copy editor (and sometimes marketing writer) in the Brand & Campaign Design department. Prior to that, I was an independent writer and editor in Chapel Hill and New York City for most of my career. After transitioning from sports writing, my work focused on history and volunteering my skills for several organizations and causes.From 2003 to 2012, I was a freelance journalist based in New York City, writing extensively for The New York Times, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, New York, Yahoo, Washington Post, and others. For four years of that period, I was a researcher/fact-checker at ESPN The Magazine and for ESPN Books. My work has appeared on the front page of The New York Times, led major news websites, and been the cover story for three magazines. I've also executed marketing/advertising writing for magazine custom content clients, including Planters, Bose, Fila, Ace Hardware, Axe, M&M’s, McDonald’s, Gillette, Bridgestone, and State Farm. I’ve written Super Bowl ads and in the voice of Mr. Peanut. I’ve interviewed a Beastie Boy and been cited by Best American Sports Writing.After returning to North Carolina, my work largely focused on issues revolving around race, especially African American history. I've also written for the News & Observer, Charlotte magazine, Carolina Alumni Review, and Cardinal & Pine. In 2020, I launched a local history newsletter, Stone Walls, and built a loyal following.I serve on the Board and as Secretary for the nonprofit Bridging the Gap, which is dedicated to closing the racial achievement and opportunity gap for Black children in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
