I am interested in how we relate to each other, particularly in digital spaces, and how narratives shape and influence that behaviour. We can use digital media to both bring people together or drive them apart, and we use stories to do both. My research focuses on how we use stories to create (or destroy) ethical contexts for behaviour. Specifically, my research considers the ethics of narrative games, Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) in particular. ARGs are games played both online and in the ‘real’ world. They are a transmedia form of storytelling that bridges the online and offline world. They fall somewhere between traditional novels, television, and film and digital and non-digital games. By investigating ARGs as a middle-space, I am exploring how games can be read as media objects and novels, film, and television can be played like games. While I am cautious of the negative aspects of social media, I am optimistic about what current and future technologies may mean for our cultures and the world. I see potential for even stronger collaboration among people to solve serious global problems.
