The Data Stewardship Operations Team Lead (DSOTL) is responsible for providing leadership to a team of Data Stewards who are responsible for metadata, data and documentation curation as it relates to ONC expeditions and data streams for a wide variety of scientific and engineering instruments and sensors. These curatorial activities record all stages of the instrument life cycle: acquisition, development, testing, deployment, commissioning, recovery, decommissioning. Once an instrument is refurbished, another cycle begins. This coordination is essential to ONC’s goals to advance ocean observing, and to deliver world-leading data products and services.The core responsibilities involve team leadership and management, expedition and instrument support, and national/international representation within the Research Data Management (RDM) community. The DSOTL guides the data stewardship operations team on setting priorities, managing workflows, adhering to industry metadata and data standards. The DSOTL works closely and in coordination with managers and leaders of other teams in the organization in digital and physical operations as well as works closely with stakeholders on scientific requirements. As new types of instruments and platforms are introduced to the network, the DSOTL leads the team in devising appropriate metadata and data acquisition frameworks that meet the research objectives and discipline norms.From time to time the DSOTL participates in offshore ship and field-based activities that occur multiple times per year for up to four weeks duration, or day and multi-day trips. The team lead also devises ways of managing a team and coordinating with stakeholders suited to a hybrid-work environment.

The Data Steward is primarily responsible for acquiring, verifying and maintaining metadata and data for ONC. Properly curated data is critical for scientific and non-scientific users to understand, interpret and analyze the information collected via the instruments on the network operated by ONC. ONC’s primary mission to maintain long time series data sets cannot be achieved without robust and accurate metadata. Secondary duties include field and at-sea support during infrastructure maintenance operations that occur multiple times a year for up to four weeks duration, or day and multi day trips.This position is required to work designated shifts through extended hours, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when supporting expedition operations.Data Stewards are responsible for:- Compiling, evaluating, and maintaining complete and accurate metadata that describes infrastructure, datasets, and field operations using relational databases and query tools such as SQL and a variety of scientific data formats and standards such as netCDF and other XML based formats. - Develop and execute procedures for data file manipulations and data reprocessing as well as ingesting and archiving autonomous instrument and cruise data- Determine requirements and verify new data acquisition software (e.g. instrument drivers, parsers, and schedules) for heterogeneous and complex instrument types, platforms and contexts (e.g. gliders, Argo floats, navigation, ADCPs, etc.)- Administer workflows and provide support during 24/7 maintenance operations in the form of collecting and organizing documentation and metadata pertaining to instrument configurations and calibration, and ensuring dive logs are complete and accurate, both at sea and ashore
