About Matthew Heath

I am a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer with a skill set focused in mechatronics (mechanical and electrical engineering, control systems, computer programming, and signal processing) which has enabled me to meet a vast array of engineering challenges using both hands-on and analytical approaches. My career has been a charmed one in that it has led me to opportunities in hybrid vehicle development, aerospace manufacturing, renewable energy microgrids, and end-user product prototyping. While diverse, these share a common denominator of mechatronics which has allowed me to address engineering problems from multiple disciplines - something I find both challenging and rewarding.

    Collaborated with Sandia National Laboratories to design, fabricate, and program a DC microgrid test bench used to identify storage requirements for commercial and military applications. Loads, sources, and storage devices were emulated by programmable power supplies and a super capacitor bank with assets interfaced to a central bus through buck-boost DC-DC converters. A distributed controller algorithm was developed using MATLAB and Simulink to manage power flow through grid assets. Devolved a custom microgrid data acquisition system using LabVIEW hardware executing MATLAB code to monitor power flow between loads and sources within the MTU Mobile Laboratory Microgrid. A graphical interface was developed to visualize power flow and demonstrate technologies being developed at MTU to potential investors; most notably the use of hybrid vehicles as energy storage devices for future microgrids.
