This ranges from pre-surgical prayers, identify coping skills and processing new diagnoses to dealing with end of life issues and bereavement needs. No two days are alike just like no two patients are alike.

As a Chaplain Resident, my role was part-time student, part-time spiritual care provider for patients, their families, and staff members of the Cleveland Clinic. Studying various topics such as group dynamics, interpersonal communication styles, personality typing inventories, active and affective listening, developmental theories and family systems theory, my peers and I provided spiritual and emotional care to patients of a 1400-bed hospital including early morning presurgical support, trauma, crisis, and critical incident response, end of life and hospice care, and routine support for many of the sickest patients a hospital might encounter. We offered weekly ecumenical Christian services and liased with other community faith leaders to offer support for patients with special needs.

Typical work days include greeting customers, stocking shelves, organizing displays, taking inventory, and assisting in sales. Many crew members with Target serve as cashiers, as well. Target team member jobs may involve heavy lifting and working on foot for long periods of time. Holiday shopping seasons may create hectic and demanding work environments at times.

A Level I Trauma Center, Northwestern Memorial serves an incredibly diverse range of patients and employs an equally diverse range of staff and faculty. Members of its Pastoral Services Department seek to provide emotional and spiritual support to individuals and families of any and all faith and belief backgrounds, providing care during traumas, helping individuals adjust to new diagnoses and prognoses, and find strength and ways of coping with their present situation. Our mission is to provide care for the whole person: mind, body, spirit, and emotion. As part of this team, I led interfaith worship services, offered daytime and overnight/on-call support, and delivered care to countless patients, families, and staff.

We're responsible for answering phones and general questions, assisting visitors, and putting on a good smile for all who enter Garrett's front doors.
