I've done end-to-end software development at Google for 16 years, on consumer-facing, developer-facing, and enterprise tools. Prior to that, I did the same at a few small software companies, ranging from a 4-person startup to a 1000-person software+services company. I like the breadth of the small-company engineering work, and the impact and leverage of the large-company environment.I'm currently the tech lead for a 35-person engineering team focused on Legal Removals: one of Google's content-moderation tools focused on responding thoughtfully to requests to remove content from Google properties. I've also worked on Google Shopping Express (online shopping from local stores), where we created our own same-day delivery network; and the Java Core Libraries Team, which created Guava.I've been doing this for long enough to have strong opinions about how software engineering should be done (quick version: it depends), and how to structure engineering teams that can deliver quickly and reliably, and can adapt quickly to environmental changes.When I joined Google, it was an engineering company, focused on building good products in the right way. Since then it has increased in size by 10x (or more); it has become an incredible market success, but that engineering culture has eroded. It still may be the best "big tech" company out there, but it's now a difference of degree, no longer of kind. If old-Google ever reappears, I hope it finds me.
