I am a Lecturer in Physics within the School of Maths and Physics at the University of Surrey.Currently, I hold the following positions of responsibility: Physics Senior Personal Tutor, Admissions Tutor, and Year 1 Co-ordinator.My present teaching commitments include: leading the Year 1 Semester 1 undergraduate laboratories, Module Lead for the Year 1 thermodynamics ('Properties of Matter') module, co-teaching a Year 3 STEM & Public Engagement module, and teaching in both the Year 1 & 2 undergraduate laboratories, running Small Group Tutorial sessions, and, stemming from my work as Progression Lead, holding focussed teaching sessions across several modules, in order to support students struggling with aspects of their degree.I have a research background in Experimental Nuclear Physics, completing my PhD in 2021. My primary experiment was conducted at CERN, with my thesis subsequently titled 'Coulomb Excitation of the semi-magic nucleus 206Hg'. During my PhD, I travelled to several laboratories across Europe and Canada, including CERN (Geneva), TRIUMF (Vancouver), and HIL (Warsaw).Core to my teaching principles is fostering a sense of confidence and wellbeing in all students, no matter their background, or academic capability.

Teaching FellowUniversity Of Surrey Feb 2021 - PresentGuildford, England, United KingdomI teach predominantly in the first and second-year undergraduate laboratories, covering a range of modules from atoms & quanta, to nuclear physics. As part of my role, I am involved with conducting and assessing examinations, reports and presentations, creating content to aid students' understanding of their laboratory work, maintaining the high standard of health and safety in the labs, and providing pastoral support to students themselves. -
Experimental Nuclear Physics Phd StudentUniversity Of Surrey Oct 2016 - Feb 2021Guildford, United KingdomThe focus of my PhD was the study of the singly-magic two proton-hole nucleus 206Hg, using the technique of Coulomb Excitation in inverse kinematics. As a result of this work, I have published two papers as the lead author, am in the process of writing a third, and am a co-author on a number of other publications from experiments I was involved in.I conducted the experiment to study 206Hg, alongside a collaboration involving a number of colleagues from around the world, at CERN-ISOLDE… Show more The focus of my PhD was the study of the singly-magic two proton-hole nucleus 206Hg, using the technique of Coulomb Excitation in inverse kinematics. As a result of this work, I have published two papers as the lead author, am in the process of writing a third, and am a co-author on a number of other publications from experiments I was involved in.I conducted the experiment to study 206Hg, alongside a collaboration involving a number of colleagues from around the world, at CERN-ISOLDE located in Geneva, using a newly-commissioned molten lead target, which enabled the production of a radioactive Hg beam. Using both 94Mo and 104Pd targets, 206Hg was Coulomb excited in the centre of the MINIBALL array, comprising of 23 HPGe detectors. A DSSSD was placed in the array's forward angles, allowing necessary detection of both recoiling particles and de-excitation gamma rays. The experiment ran for 5 days in total, and required seamless organisation and collaboration between all scientists involved, in order to ensure all experimental shifts were covered and monitored sufficiently.Subsequently to the completion of this experiment, I analysed and interpreted the resultant data, using a variety of data analysis and computational techniques. I primarily used the programming language C++, alongside the nuclear & particle physics analysis software ROOT, developed by CERN. In addition, I also used the Fortran programming language, in order to implement the Coulomb excitation least-squares search code GOSIA, which combines theoretical models with experimental results.Over the course of my PhD, I travelled to a number of different facilities around the world, in locations such as: Finland, Switzerland, Vancouver, Italy, Poland and France, participating in a number of experiments, conferences, and workshops during this time.I completed my PhD study in December 2020, and subsequently passed my Viva examination in April 2021.
