Multidisciplinary scientist with demonstrated expertise in neuroscience, device development, data modeling, and team leadership. A scientific innovator mixing neuroscience and psychology with just enough statistics, physics, electrical engineering, programming, and business to be dangerous. Mike has held positions at the government, academia, and industry. He is proud to have a BS from Heidelberg College and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of New Mexico. Mike has investigated the neurophysiology of normal memory, epilepsy, mental illness, and cognitive dysfunction using the advanced neuroimaging techniques electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Mike helped to develop MEG techniques to identify brain areas where epilepsy originates and aided in planning more than 100 brain surgeries. More recently, Mike’s team developed novel approaches to brain stimulation with transcranial electrical brain stimulation (tES) including device development, electrode development, integrating neuroimaging data, and implementation of real-time, closed-loop tES. The technologies developed in Mike’s laboratory increase the safety, comfort, and stability of the tES and have demonstrable effects in learning, memory, and attention. Mike has published more than 50 papers in the fields of traumatic brain injury, autism, schizophrenia, and development of novel technologies in MEG, fMRI, and brain stimulation. In addition, Mike’s work has been featured in the popular media including; Newsweek, Business Week, The Week, The New Scientist, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Scientific American, NOVA, Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, Radio Lab, The PBS News Hour, TEDxDayton, The Doctors, and others. Mike’s work is, or has been, funded by federal, industry, and foundation grants for a total of more than $11.8 million.
