A defining time in Fotis's career. This is where he acquired all of his knowledge on metadata, learning from the best in the business, Dr. Getaneh Alemu. Fotis was also successfully coached by David Wright, acquisitions manager at the time, on how to improve as a professional, how to communicate effectively, how to manage people's expectation and also how to be ambitious without feeling guilty about it. The environment nurtured a lot of friendships and laughter, while tackling some important issues for resource discovery.Highlights:1. Understood and developed higher level principles on metadata and resource discovery implementing RDA guidelines and modernising the online library catalogue2. Developed self-management skills: time management, communications, and working with multiple teams.
London, United Kingdom
Confidence grew in Fotis during his time as a cataloguer/metadata assistant, and his ambition led him to apply to become part of the Committee for the cataloguing branch of CILIP. What an experience this was. Highlights:1. Overseeing communications posting regularly for the Twitter account and the Blog.2. Part of the organising committee for the conference with approx 300 participants - Also presented the membership consultation survey
Bath, United Kingdom
Highlight:1st Paycheck
Bath, United Kingdom
The seed that was planted way back in 2010-2011 was to become the fruit in 2014. After landing safely in London, he took the coach to Bath. UK is a different challenge to Greece and what libraries offer. While an intern, his responsibilities were minimal so his mind was free to absorb lessons. He mainly observed professionals navigating the complex environment supporting students making the most of resources. Highlights:1. Learned how to use search engines and browsing digital tools to help students find resources2. Learned and understood the journey of resource acquisition: from Reading Lists - to Inventory - To Publisher Platforms and then book receipting.3. Experienced first-hand a complex organisational structure and how teams are formed in libraries, and their unique usefulness in delivering Library Services. Summarising the experience, he learned how a library works in a top University in the UK.
Thessaloniki, Greece
Highlight: First official experience in interacting with users asking library-related questions. This event transformed him mentally into becoming the librarian he is today. What was previously theory learned from books, now became practice and real-world learning. He finally understood why cataloguing was important, and crucially, why taxonomies and classification were inventions of unparalleled importance. He was convinced that a career in libraries was possible.
