Bartender
Bartender & Server
The Bombshelter Pub (colloquially "Bomber") was the on-campus pub run by the undergraduate student union at the University of Waterloo. The restaurant served everyone from the president of the university and other high-level admin, to first years and visiting prospective students, and everyone in between, so there is always somebody interesting to talk to within its walls. I began working there in November 2013 as a way to earn grocery and rent money, but over years it has become so much more than a means to that end. I never would have imagined the lessons it would teach me and the growth it would facilitate, and yet as my time as a student comes to an end and I begin my search for a career, the lessons working in the service industry will be valuable assets for the rest of my life.My responsibilities at Bomber include the basics: getting people's orders correct, employing safe food-handling practices, keeping a clean and organized workstation, but they also extend far beyond that. As the face of the business it is my responsibility to provide the best possible experience I can to my guests. That entails micromanaging timings of everything, reading people and knowing their needs before even they do, maintaining a friendly atmosphere no matter what, and running occasional damage control when things do not go to plan. I need to be psychologist, manager, public relations, damage control, as well as order-taker and food-deliverer. What this has built is a robust ability to quickly assess any situation and figure out potential courses of action, if any are necessary, to address it.
Host, Expo, & Bar-Back
-As host, my responsibilities were primarily controlling the flow of incoming customers in order to never overwhelm any single server-As expediter (expo), my main responsibility was bringing food from the kitchen to tables, checking on tables, and assist all the servers in their general duties.-As bar-back, my job was to keep the bar stocked so the bartenders could focus exclusively on serving drinks. This included refilling ice, restocking fridges using FiFo (including keeping meticulous inventories of what went in and out of said fridges), changing kegs, cutting fruit, and other minor tasks.-I needed to have an understanding of many aspects of the restaurant industry to perform all these jobs well-Through Harlow's I learned about a large selection of small-brewery craft beers and their associated characteristics
