My Story:During college, I had a job flying around the country doing software installs and training for business phone systems. The software I was working with was terrible and customers absolutely hated it. I saw a clear need for something better in the market and I was confident that my self-taught programming skills were good enough to hit the mark. As soon as I graduated, I turned down all of the job offers I had drummed up, partnered with Cody (my boss), and established Xima Software. We brought in my brother Michael as our 3rd partner and we set up shop in my parents' basement. For the next two years, we hunkered down and wrote code targeted at filling the needs that I had experienced while on the road. After nearly two years of hacking away in the basement, we finally had something that met the needs of our alpha customers so we put the solution up online and opened it up for beta testing. Cody knew where all of the telecom resellers were hanging out online so he posted an invitation to download the beta and we just got slammed - completely inundated. Our timing could not have been better, the need for what we had built was at its peak. We rushed to meet the demand, fix the issues, and formalize reseller agreements with telecom integrators around the globe who were ready and anxious to resell what we had created in the basement.Over the next year and a half, we dumped all of our revenue back into the company. We got a small office, hired 3 people (2 of whom are still with us), and started to move up market with additional features and functionality. I finally started to take a paycheck nearly 4 years after we formed our little bootstrapped company in the basement. Today Xima has nearly 100 employees, strong worldwide sales, and is the de facto leader in our market segment. As a first time entrepreneur, I have had to figure out how to start, run, and scale a company. My day to day focus has changed over the years from writing code in the basement to strengthening our core business and leading the company into new, larger markets. A big part of me still misses writing code every day but I really enjoy my role at Xima. My job is incredibly fulfilling and I feel super lucky that I get to be part of Xima Software and its bright future.
