Not many people grow up wanting to be a claims manager.I was no exception. I wanted to be a journalist. Writing stories and breaking news felt big and important but as I worked through college I realized that that wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life. I wasn’t sure what I wanted. I worked through college in sales roles and was very successful. In fact my first real job after college was a promotion from within Cingular Wireless to a B2B sales position. It was a great job and I was succeeding there. But with little work experience or understanding of corporate life I grew frustrated with changes that I didn’t understand and when a recruiter called about another sales position I took that opportunity.I had a couple of sales roles after that but I would eventually get bored with the role or what I was selling and would move on fairly quickly. Then I got a call from a recruiter with Farmers and the rest is history.I loved working property claims. There was so much to learn (and still is) and the role never got stale for me. With time in position I was also able to develop a taste and skill for helping others learn their own role. That eventually grew into a leadership role within my team and eventually led me to taking people leader positions within the company. Helping others develop within their roles and into other positions they worked hard to achieve has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my career. Along the way I have developed a lot of useful skills including quality planning and feedback, managing staff, change management and a lot more. There are days when the job is tough but I can say that while I never would have dreamed this would be my career path. I’m thankful for the opportunities I’ve had as well as what I have learned along the way.
