Drafting and obtaining patents is only the first component to protecting intellectual property. At Thermo Fisher Scientific, I focus on advising individual business units in chomatograpy, mass spectrometry, materials analysis, and electron optics on all aspects of intellectual property protection. Activities range from analyzing freedom to operate ahead of product releases, capturing more IP from R&D divisions to increase patent filings, protecting trade secrets, and advising on collaborative agreements with companies and universities. I provide decision makers with the information to assess risks and set the roadmap for R&D and product development.During my time as a Patent Attorney at McCarter & English, I focused mainly on patent preparation and prosecution for high-tech and medical devices clients. In my early career, I developed a strong scientific background in both academic and industrial settings that I leverage daily to understand client inventions and add value to the client's portfolio. Although my primary fields of expertise are physics, laser science, optics, electrical engineering, and nanotechnology, I have also worked with clients in diverse areas such as medical devices and green/alternative energies such as solar power.As a student, my experiences ran the gamut from core physics research (muon detection for the Large Hadron collider, atom/laser interactions, and dilute gas Bose Einstein condensates) to the intersection of biology and physics (modeling cell labeling using metal nanoparticles). I worked in physics labs, biomedical engineering labs, and the university's core imaging facility on as many instruments as they would train me to use! As an engineer, I worked on laser ablation for manufacturing and development of consumer lighting products as an inventor. These experiences continue to inform my approach to client needs because I can understand the invention and provide insight and direction to match the client's goals. As the invention grows and evolves, the patent protection must also grow and change. I provide the crucial advice the client needs to grow the value of the invention.
