In February of 2022, I began doing volunteer work in Dr. Marino Resendiz' lab at CU Denver. Dr. Resendiz' lab focuses on how the structure of RNA and modifications to that structure influence the function of RNA. I am learning techniques fundamental to organic synthesis, such as TLC, NMR, silica gel column chromatography, and several other routine techniques relevant to synthesis.

The Healthcare Interest Program (HIP) gives students from CU Denver, Metro State University, and Regis University an opportunity to shadow professionals in nursing and medicine, as well as connect with a mentor in their prospective fields. Through HIP, I have shadowed Dr. David Scudder, an internal medicine and pediatrics resident and former high school science teacher. I've shadowed Dr. Scudder for over thirty hours in an outpatient clinical setting and an inpatient hospital setting.

I work as a CNA in the inpatient bone marrow transplant (BMT) unit of UCHealth. My time with BMT has been a great opportunity to explore the ups and downs of working in the healthcare industry. It has given me an appreciation for how crucial of a role registered nurses and nurse aides play in patient care. I've been able to see how complex of a system healthcare really is, from nurses, providers, social workers, technicians, counselors, and others who work directly with patients, to those people who work to keep the hospital functioning like maintainers, engineers, laboratory scientists, and hospital administrators.
