I was brought in by the executive team of HealthFirst and Banyan International to help them reboot their software development and IT support teams. I started from the ground up and reworked their recruiting and hiring process for all of technology. This resulted in a number of high quality, successful hires. I intensively trained the entire technology team, and some of the management team, in Lean/Agile processes. I introduced the concepts of test-driven development, code reviews, requirements analysis, acceptance testing, continuous integration, continuous deployment, and test automation to the engineering organization and mentored the teams through some of the growing pains of adopting best practices. The result of my efforts was the first successful production deliveries in 2 years, massive decreases in defects and corresponding increases in quality, better quality of life for the technology team that finally had some wins and was not being yelled at all the time, and appreciation from the management team that technology was not just a cost center but was actually able to produce working software.

As an Engineering Manager and Principal Architect at Pharmacy OneSource I fulfilled a number of complementary roles within the software development organization. In collaboration with other software architects, technical leads, and managers within the IT organization I worked to research and define future direction, provide architectural guidance, and promote best practices. I worked closely with the PMO, product owners, and executive steering committee to prioritize and charter the efforts of the product development group. With an eye toward managing technical complexity in the enterprise and maintaining close alignment with business objectives I worked to define and promote application, system, and enterprise level architectures within Pharmacy OneSource and the Wolters Kluwer Clinical Solutions division. I further functioned in various capacities as a project manager, business analyst, and technical lead on a business critical effort to rebuild the architecture of Pharmacy OneSource’s flagship product Sentri7. Central to this next generation platform was the implementation of a massively parallel approach to scaling medical data processing and real-time structured search using GigaSpaces implementation of tuple space and the JBoss Drools rule engine.

As a discipline lead at Ascentium, I worked with the other discipline leads, the practice leads, and the CTO to manage the $11 million consulting revenue driven by our division. The focus of our division was enterprise technology consulting with an emphasis on Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. We also provided software architecture, business process, and project management consulting as well as custom application development. My participation on the management team, which ran that line of business, included a wide range of activities such as staffing, budgeting, forecasting, project planning, and sales pipeline management. Another aspect of this position was to provide training, mentoring, and performance reviews for engineers within the division as their personnel development manager. In addition I provided technical leadership for enterprise consulting projects. As a project technical lead, I contribute to all phases of a project including RFP, estimation, SOW, resourcing, architecture, design, and implementation.

As principal architect I was charged with two primary tasks. The first was leading a team of engineers to improve stability in the legacy financial accounting software to support ongoing sales for that platform. The second task was to design and build a next generation platform, moving away from legacy technology (powerbuilder) and design decisions (monolithic desktop application) to a web-based SaaS model leveraging current technologies. A key aspect of my role was to provide technical leadership to the entire development team. I helped guide all changes within the product through the use of design reviews and code reviews. My oversight of the product architecture included all facets of the platform from software models, to data models and schema design. This was a very hands-on position where I was not only in charge of design and process, but I was also heavily involved in implementation.

As architect for corporate systems, my primary role was to lead a team tasked with planning and implementing the integration of the disparate enterprise systems within Ascentium. Those systems include Axapta, CRM, Changepoint, MOSS, Intranet, HRIS, and multiple legacy PSA applications. Analyzed and enhanced existing business processes to meet the changing demands of a rapidly growing company was a key responsibility in this role. Complementary to that task was the selection, implementation, and integration of best of breed solutions for the internal systems used to meet those business requirements. Layering custom functionality on top of existing software packages, as well as developing custom data providers, reports, messaging and migration components, comprise a third aspect of this position.

The Core Services team was a small group of senior level software engineers working in a “Patterns & Practices” role within Zetron engineering. We investigated and prototyped new technologies and worked with product teams to integrate them into new applications. We also influenced the adoption of best practices for all parts of the SDLC by publishing technical information documentation to the organization and by modeling these practices in our own projects. Our engineers were inserted into product line projects to fulfill software lead roles and to mentor other engineers. Another aspect of the work was the design and development of libraries and components that can be leveraged across several applications and product teams. I was directly involved with the building of the Core Services team from the ground up. Mentoring and performing progress reviews, project management, engineering estimates, and technical leadership for my team members was also an integral part of my work. I was a standing member of all engineering charter committees dealing with software and was involved in the refining of Zetron’s development methodology (iterative RUP), the creation of software design review roadmaps, and the adoption of standard modeling practices in the organization (UML). Some other practices I personally brought to the organization are: scrum-style status meetings, test-driven design, code reviews, continuous integration, BOM approach to modeling, and use-case driven requirements. Technical information documentation and guidelines my team produced included logging, threading, exception handling, localization, and date/time data handling. My team and I were involved in hands-on development of a number of projects including: VOIP radio dispatch, telephony switching monitoring system, CRM, authentication, and core APIs.

As a software architect I was involved in nearly every aspect of our software engineering process including: designing and building new services and components, refining formal software engineering processes, modeling and documenting all information systems, and creating vision documents and roadmaps for next generation product lines. As a development manager I was responsible for project and personnel management of my team. I provided accountability to upper management and maintained visibility for our engineering work to the rest of the company. I was involved in directing product vision, and managing resource allocations for upcoming projects across the entire engineering organization. I was a key contributor to technology discussions with upper management to find the projects that best aligned with our business objectives, given the estimated costs and benefits of those items. My role also included interaction with our vendors for selection and analysis in order to manage our costs, keeping our systems conformed to vendor changes, and forecasting our future needs. I was also heavily involved in hands-on software development of multiple market data software systems.

Designed applications for use in military intelligence products. Held top secret and SCI clearances. Worked in conjunction with business analysts, management, customers, and engineers to design and develop new products for integration into a suite of field-deployed applications.Researched, designed and implemented server side architecture for event-driven alerts for the intelligence analysis platform. Developed a framework for Austin Info System's first ever cross-product suite of graphical analysis tools.

As a platform engineer I designed and implemented core product features and components. Created, published and reviewed product requirements and design documents. As manager of systems engineering I built a team of six engineers from the ground up. Responsible for architecting and leading the implementation of a suite of automated test products to fully regression and stress test the platform. Built a wide range of test harness applications and platform extension tools. Developed simulation environments to emulate client server interaction. Performed detailed test plan design and documentation.

Developed mission critical applications that provide real-time, streaming market data to the CyberTrader suite of services. Provided technical leadership and architectural oversight of market data systems. Designed and implemented applications such as: pricing engine, scalable caching, risk & account management, and market data simulators.
