I provided freelance estimating, commercial and project management services to a number of organisations during the pandemic.

Nottingham

In my capacity as Commercial Manager with MLB Projects, I led business development in the high-specification residential property market. This encompassed directing project commercials, including identifying buying gains and arranging pricing structures with suppliers, as well as overseeing the drafting of documentation to support internal corporate processes and promote services externally, such as job descriptions and employment contracts, terms and conditions of business and corporate policies. I also provided technical engineering expertise to support production and the CAD resource, and by liaising with existing contacts I was pleased to have had the opportunity to facilitate the appointment of MLB as a new supplier to a major national construction firm. Like many others my position became redundant due to the impact of Covid-19 on the sector.

By identifying opportunities and maximising relationships with staff from independent procurement teams and world-renowned institutions including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, British Museum, Imperial War Museum, TATE Modern, and National Portrait Gallery, I was able to support tender processes for projects with a combined value of over £25m. I also successfully delivered all aspects of permanent museum exhibition fit-out projects worth £5.6m for high-profile national museums and galleries including the National Maritime Museum, Kensington Palace, and the Northampton Museum & Art Gallery. This comprised managing the tender pre-qualification stage and completing bid submissions, as well as leading design development and prototyping. In practical terms, I collaborated with exhibition designers, project management firms, cost management firms, client in-house procurement teams and specialist sub-contractors to oversee all aspects of manufacturing and site installation, including cost and change management.

I founded The Hub in 2006 as a museum exhibition fit-out contractor, turned over £1m in our first year and then grew it to over £5m, with a workforce of forty staff. I was also able to position The Hub as the industry’s favoured contractor for projects with values of between £250k - £1m. A key element of the role was to identify business opportunities in the sector, and having done so, I directed the management of all aspects of bid submissions. This included overseeing the completion of pre-qualification questionnaires, methodologies and approach statements, as well as adjudicating the commercial aspect of tender submissions, attending post-tender clarification interviews and making presentations to client boards. Finally, I delegated project management responsibilities following the successful award of projects to the company.

Bromsgrove

I was pleased to have been able to achieve turnover of £4m from £750k within four years by delivering bid submissions in order to grow the company’s market share in the cultural and heritage sector. As part of the role, I also fulfilled and supervised project management responsibilities.

With Brindleyplace, I oversaw the management of all aspects of commercial interior fit-outs, including mechanical and electrical systems, flooring, partitioning, decoration and furniture.

This role involved directing the production and installation of point-of-sale retail equipment, specialist furniture and traders’ desks.

I was trained as a project manager in all aspects of shop fitting and in time headed up national accounts for Clarks Shoes, Aldi Foodstores and Clinton Cards.The owner of the business was not only the MD to me during my most formative working years but was also a mentor. He not only taught me what to do but what not to do by example and I owe most of what I am today to him.

I joined the company as a design engineer working on air conditioning projects across the UK. Predominantly my role was that of a project manager/draughtsman responsible for producing layouts of ductwork and air handling units and managing the projects from commencement to handover. The company was liquidated in October 1991.

I did an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineer coupled with day release study for an HNC in Mechanical Engineering.
