Supporting the City Council with a review of a current Environmental Service contract and the production of an options appraisal.

Mentoring and supporting the Managing Director. Advising on business strategy and business planning around the key priorities for the business. Providing a friendly ear, challenge, and support for the great business ideas and enthusiam that live within BizWizUK.

Supported Stoke on Trent City Council through 3 seperate independent reviews into issues raised by staff. The review findings were used by senior management to implement a range of interventions and provide a way forward on staff issues that had been at an impasse.

Review of the Trade Waste business with the objective of creating a more commercial approach to the business. Proposed and implemented a different approach to the introduction of a fourth container round, constructed a new commercial strategy for charges and developed a 5 year business plan redirecting the business into the most profitable areas.Carried out a review of the Arboricultural services resulting in proposals to rebalance the income streams that support the service.

Mentoring and coaching the senior management team, providing advice and support on the transition of the service to a newly formed company, guiding the team on Governance, Business Planning, Business Development and Risk Management.

Working as an associate for Association of Public Sector Excellence (APSE) April/May 2015 Completed a project to consider a strategic case for the formation of a Local Authority Trading Company (LATC) for Grounds Maintenance evaluating potential markets, identifying and maximising possible new business opportunities across the region.

Delivered business planning support to the senior management team through the transition from public sector working to private sector working. Led the team through the Business Planning process and developed Governance structures, whilst mentoring the senior management team and Board members.

Support to the development of the business case and implementation project for their local authority trading companies. Specific mentoring to senior managers following a skills gap analysis.

Delivered support and advice on the development of Orbitas Ltd in their delivery of Bereavement Services. Advice and guidance on Business Planning and developing a Risk Register which included bespoke SWOT and Pestle Analysis for the business.

Executive responsibility for the business, strategic and operational advice to the Board, strategic SHEQ responsibility, lead on the business development for the 5 year business plan. development of new commercial opportunities. Main contact for shareholder, political and customer relationships.

Led a large multifunctional team delivering a range of services for Stockport council. Worked closely with the independent Chairman on the development of the Company Board. Responsible for driving the strategic and operational objectives of the business to deliver long-term and sustainable growth. Generated increase in turnover from £28M in 2006 to £45M by 2011, and 1200 staff. Set out the vision for the transformation of traditional front line services into commercially viable businesses through a change in culture, and attitude of the staff. Worked with the Trade Unions and Management to support and deliver this through staff development, training, restructuring and streamlining of the businesses.Supported a new Council strategy to become one of the top recycling authorities in the UK through taking over the service delivery from the private sector in 2007. Through collaborative working with the client and the Trade Unions, delivered a major change programme involving the introduction of a multi wheeled bin system. Recycling levels increased from circa 20% in 2007 to over 60% by 2011, putting Stockport Council at the forefront for recycling its domestic waste and delivering a cleaner Borough. This also achieved significant budget saving for the council by avoiding ever-increasing landfill taxes.

Instrumental in creating the vision for an alternative service model that would meet the challenges facing front line council service delivery. Led the project team of Members and Trade Union representatives through the options appraisal process, working closely with the Scrutiny Committee and key stakeholders. Championed the Local Authority Trading Company model as the best value option to the Council for the future.Was the Chief Officer for a range of front line services operating in a commercial manner throughout the CCT and Best Value era’s. Due to external contractor failings, led the successful TUPE transfer of School Meals staff back into the council.Following Best Value reviews, harnessed the support of political parties, Trade Unions, employees and management for the outsourcing of Leisure Services into a not for profit organisation (Stockport Sports Trust), and the externalisation of Transport Services involving the sourcing of alternative workshops and the supply of a new fleet. Managing this partnership led to its successful re-tender in 2011.
