About Nicholas Rivas

Over the last eleven years of my professional career, I have had the opportunity to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from New Mexico State University, while also serving as a part-time engineer for UPS. Once graduated, I entered a full-time engineering management role within UPS where I oversaw facility maintenance, employee health and safety, environmental compliance, and hazardous material handling for all of Arizona and New Mexico. After several years within this role, I obtained my Master of Space Operations degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. While completing this program, I received the opportunity to enter the space industry with Maxar Technologies as a Satellite Operations Engineer. This role gave me hands on experience with satellite operations within the low-earth orbit regime, as well as the capability to work alongside customers from across the world to ensure successful completion of their missions. Shortly after joining Maxar, I received another opportunity with Boeing as a Spacecraft Systems Engineer where I was responsible for the oversight of the satellite bus for the 702HP family of satellites. This included subsystems such as power, thermal, propulsion, attitude control, and telemetry & command. Once I completed my Master’s degree, I assumed the role of propulsion subject matter expert, working alongside Boeing’s Chief Engineer for In-Space Propulsion Systems. This role allowed me complete oversight of the propulsion systems on Boeing 702HP/MP platforms, including electric propulsion (Xenon Ion Propulsion) and liquid propulsion (mono/bi-propellant) systems. As the designated expert for these systems, I conducted daily analysis for on-orbit vehicles to monitor performance and efficiency, while also providing technical expertise for any major issues. I now serve as a Principal Space Vehicle Engineer with Northrop Grumman where I provide on-orbit and sustainment engineering activities in support of unique mission requirements. To further my understanding of the propulsion subsystem, I am attending Purdue University in pursuit of my second Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering with a focus in Propulsion.
