In this role, I was responsible for creating detailed drawings, creating lock-out tag-out safety sheets, making revisions based on shop floor feedback, verifying the Bill of Materials of partially assembled machines, and some minor design work. The Detailing work I completed at Guide was composed of designs the other engineers had just completed. This work allowed me to become more familiar with the standard ways that engineering parts are dimensioned as well as the different formats that companies use to detail their parts. This task also freed up much of the Engineers' time because this was one less thing they had to do after completing their designs. The lock-out tag-out work that I completed consisted of identifying the locations of energy sources on the machine designs and making the lock-out tag-out sheet that has the proper shutdown procedure to ensure that nobody gets hurt by an energy source on the machine. The Bill of Materials task consisted of going to the designated warehouse space for each specific machine and verifying that the purchased components were there. This task also required me to look at the Bill of Materials and verify that all of the parts that were on the machine were properly assembled. The last task that I completed while working at Guide was design work on a smart nest stand for one of the automated presses that the engineers designed. The smart nest was designed so that the machine knows what fixture is currently not in the tooling stand. This ensures that the only program that can run on the machine is the one that is specifically for that particular fixture. This project showed me how powerful engineering tools like Inventor and AutoCAD can be when working on a design. Overall, this internship showed me that there is much more to engineering than what school has taught me, and it made me excited to start my career.
