General Manager
LEGOLAND Discovery Center is an indoor playground full of over one million LEGO Bricks, and focuses on fun for children aged 3-10 and their families. As General Manager, I'm responsible for everything from customer excellence to financial performance, keeping the focus on the continued improvement of our guest's journey. That being said, a typical day can easily go from a marketing update in the morning, meeting new hires at lunch and working on the next big attraction during the afternoon. While it can be difficult to define everyday responsibilities for this role, some of the keys of the job include:-Full management of revenue streams and operating costs to ensure proper EBITDA generation to our set budgets. -Capital Planning and Project Management of the next new attraction. These have included LEGO Builds, play areas, ride enhancements and more. -Writing the 5 year business plan and strategizing our markets, investments and costs to continue growing the business in the long term. -A focus on industry best Health and Safety practices to minimize risks to both our guests and employees. -Ensuring a solid Commercial experience including Retail, F&B and Photography.-Keeping employee retention and engagement at a high level throughout the year. -Working with key stakeholders inside and out of the business on projects, improvements and more.
General Manager
WILD LIFE is a very small zoo on Hamilton Island located in the Whitsundays in the Great Barrier Reef. We've been around for over 10 years and specialize in our Koalas. We also have a variety of snakes, macropods, birds and other reptiles. We also have the coolest (and best) breakfast on the island, where you get to eat with the Koalas while they munch on theirs in the trees around the tables.As General Manager for WILD LIFE I was responsible for the daily well being of the attraction as a whole. While not primarily responsible for the animals wellbeing (we had an excellent Curatorial team for that!) it was a primary focus to have happy, and healthy animals. I was generally responsible for running the business side of things - daily operations, health and safety, cash flow, commercial operation (F&B and Retail), HR, education, some marketing, and networking with other businesses on the island.
Operations Manager
As Operations Supervisor I am responsible for everything at the Aquarium other than (usually) the animals, which means its something new every day. I manage a group of around 40 employees that help educate and entertain the public about marine life and the challenges it faces. Other duties include managing a nearly $1,000,000 Operations budget, event planning, general upkeep of the building, hiring, employee relations, project management, and other situations as they arise.
Graduate
The Graduate program is designed to teach a staff member as much about General Management of a tourist attraction in the shortest period of time. For 18 months, I completed three placements at three different attractions in two countries. August 2010 - March 2011 - Guest Experience Manager - Madame Tussauds New York: My first true management position where I was instantly thrown into my role. I was put in charge of around 20 employees and handled scheduling, guest experiences, and the daily duties of managing an attraction that brings in over a million guests annually. March 2011 - September 2011 - LEGOLAND California - HR Partner: After six months working in Times Square, working behind the scenes mass hiring for a year round theme park was a big change. I quickly dove into labor law books and learned how to hire new employees. In six months I lead training seminars, group interviews, and new hire orientations. I dealt with the largest I-9 audit in the company's history and plenty of employee relation issues. I grasped HR quickly and its stuck with me in my future roles. September 2011 - February 2012 - Entertainments Manager - SEA LIFE Brighton, UK: Moving to the UK and learning how businesses run across the pond was one of the bigger learning curves with Merlin Entertainments. During my time I did large amounts of research on the aquarium and created the Brighton Aquarium timeline. I also researched and rewrote all educational talks, managed entertainments employees and even produced a company video. Along with 18 months of management experience, the Graduate Program also sent me on over three weeks of training and development which included finance training, marketing training, and general management development training.
