Profile bio

About Nitin Kumar

I have been fascinated by the development sector since childhood, growing up in Purnea, Bihar, an underdeveloped state in eastern India with poor developmental outcomes despite its rich natural and human resources. To understand this "resource curse," I developed an interest in problem-solving, initially through engineering, and later in working with communities and governments on impactful and scalable strategies, as demonstrated in my academic and professional journey.Driven by my passion for problem-solving and critical thinking, I pursued an undergraduate degree in engineering from IIT-ISM Dhanbad and worked with numerous stakeholders across departments in the cement industry from 2013 to 2014. While I enjoyed and learned a lot about operations and planning, I soon realized my true calling was to work with people and solve policy issues in development, particularly in my home state. This realization led me to transition from mining engineering to becoming a development practitioner and consultant for the past decade. Many who know or have worked with me praise my approach and skills at "getting things done," a testament to the mentorship I have received.Recently, I completed my second master's (MPAID) from Harvard Kennedy School in the summer of 2023. As a first-generation international student, I feel fortunate to have reached this prestigious institution from a small town in India and to have interacted with students from around the world. Currently, I am working with SHRI, a social impact data-driven startup, to scale its operations in India so that everyone, everywhere has access to high quality sanitation and hygiene services. In the era of climate change and health crises, my background in engineering and policy helps me appreciate sustainable development, especially at the intersection of health, environment, and economics.Professional Skills:- Strategic Planning- Project Management- Leadership- Time Responsiveness- Goal-oriented- People Management- Business Development- Sustainable & Safe Operations- Evidence-based Policy Planning- Critical & Holistic Problem Solving- Thriving in Ambiguity- Storytelling- Attention to Detail- Connecting dotsDomain Knowledge:- Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)- Infectious Diseases Prevention- Immunization- Healthcare Systems and FinancingPersonal Interests:- Outdoor running (completed 2 half marathons in India and Kenya)- Hiking (India, USA, Kenya)- Blogging- Listening to podcasts on philosophy, psychology, and productivity
