My overall area of research is in judgment and decision making. I develop methodologies for testing descriptive mathematical models of decision making. Some of my previous work focused on evaluating the predictive accuracy of simple decision rules (aka "heuristics") against benchmark statistical procedures like linear regression. My current research includes classifying decision makers according to their "risk attitude" (whether they prefer riskier or safer options) across choice contexts like finance, alcohol use, risky sexual activity, health and environmental policy. My research also investigates whether decision makers' choices satisfy core properties of "rational" choice theory. Current projects examine this question in the contexts of alcohol intoxication and cognitive aging.
