About Nick Sharp
Dr. Nick Sharp, an entrepreneur, scientist, and veterinarian, is deeply committed to building companies at the intersection of science and medicine. As a clinician, he is double board-certified in veterinary surgery and neurology. His dedication to translational medicine goes back many years. He received his PhD from Duke University School of Medicine for identifying the mutation in a canine model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the first of just two large animal models now used to develop therapies for this disease. After spending over 20 years in academia, Nick has authored 135 scientific articles, including two books, 30 chapters, and 66 peer-reviewed publications. His current research interest is to analyze the clinical and market opportunities for RSK inhibition in oncology, particularly breast cancer. At present, he is one of just three directors who joined the board at the inception of PhoenixMD ten years ago. The chemistry efforts had only begun, and the first clinical lead had yet to be nominated. The company is now entering Phase 2 clinical trials with a first-in-class small molecule that can potentially change how we think about precision oncology in breast cancer and beyond.After his career in academia, in 2004, Nick became an owner and partner at Canada West Veterinary Specialists, where he helped to grow the business from a small team with a big vision to a 26,000 sq. ft., 24-hour emergency referral hospital. It is now one of North America's most successful, privately owned, multi-specialty veterinary practices.

CurrentOur work is focused on developing cancer therapies by inhibiting kinases, a class of enzymes that have proven to be the most tractable drug targets in oncology. As our RSK2 inhibitor enters Phase 2 trials in hormone-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer, we are focusing on patients who have both failed first-line therapy with CDK4/6 plus aromatase inhibitors and who express high tissue levels of RSK2. My primary role is the competitive analysis of approved and developing agents in this market.

CurrentI am one of three owners of Canada West Vets, which is a dedicated veterinary referral centre with expertise in core disciplines. We work as an extension of the family veterinarian to provide second opinions or specialized care. Our team of specialists and support staff work together to facilitate the best possible outcome for each patient entrusted in our care by the referring veterinarians and our patients’ families.The hospital is staffed with experienced doctors and technicians 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We accept all referrals and strive to provide a high level of care for our patients, our clients and our referring veterinarians. We have access to extensive technology (on-site CT imaging, MRI and the ability to place pacemakers, to name a few), but our strength lies with the clinical expertise and diagnostic knowledge of our specialists as well as the dedication and experience of our hospitalists and support staff.
