Accenture Managed Education Network (SchoolNet) Venture Development:Omar led the creation of an Accenture Information Technology (IT) outsourcing service for the K-12 public education marketplace. This market offering, known as the "Managed Education Network" or "SchoolNet", offered schools a service that provides a complete IT environment (including PCs, printers, filtered Internet access, application software, technical support, help desk services, teacher training, in-school teacher coaching and support) for a flat cost-per-student-per-year fee, with no up-front capital investment required. This service utilized wireless LAN, thin client-server computing and proxy server technologies in order to create an integrated system that meets the IT needs of today's schools.Wireless LANs provide an alternative means of network access in schools with asbestos abatement issues, as well as introducing mobility as an education enabler. Thin client-server computing (TCSC) allows for the computing complexity of the school's IT environment to be centrally run and managed. TCSC also allows for older PCs and Macintosh computers to continue to be successfully used by schools. Sophisticated proxy server technology allows for the Internet to be filtered based upon parent and teacher criteria.Omar's technical architecture for this project is covered by United States Patent 6,760,748 (Filed January 20, 1999), entitled "Instructional System Grouping of Student Terminals".
