About John Brewer
I am a recent graduate Ph.D. from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles currently pursuing full-time employment opportunities in optical sciences and engineering. My research focuses on simulation, characterization, and fabrication of photonic and metameterial devices for use in the long wavelength infrared. My most recent work is the investigation of Mie-resonant all dielectric metasurfaces for imaging optics in the infrared. Previously I worked on the simulation and design of laser propelled light sail systems, and the design and assembly of an infrared Michaelson interferometric test setup. I am broadly interested in nanophotonics, optical metamaterials, and other novel schemes for improvement of optical systems.

Currently I am using rigorous coupled wave analysis and finite-difference time-domain methods to simulate, characterize, and fabricate nanophotonic all-dielectric Mie-Resonant optical structures on silicon for enhanced optical transmission in the long-wave infrared.Previous Projects:Designed, built, and aligned a functional 8um DFB QCL source infrared Michaelson type interferometer using off the shelf optical components for infrared optical surface testing.Designed and analyzed a space of 300k+ theoretical relativistic lightsails using Hoffman2 supercomputer to determine thermal and accelerative merit, and collaborated with a multi-disciplinary team of professors, graduate, and undergraduate students for the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative.

Ph.D. technical intern working in Intel's High Speed Input Output Core Competency group. Performed optical software exploration, working to understand high level integration and interoperability with existing Intel workflows. Gained detailed understanding of simulation product utilities and made recommendations towards future software pathfinding efforts. Created documentation for program use as applied to HSIO group selected test cases and examples. Acted as Co-Lead of Intern Cohort 50, organizing intern events weekly and fostering community for remote interns across the US.
