I trained as a solicitor at Davenport Lyons in 1996. On qualification, I took on a PSL role, with a remit to modernise and standardise the firm's legal drafting in several practice areas, including Commercial, IP, Music and Employment.Being knee-deep in the drafting of precedents inevitably led to my involvement in developing firm-wide document production standards, at a time when these were still relatively in their infancy.From there, it was a short step into the world of document automation, and the hands-on development of increasingly sophisticated VBA-driven documents and processes. Like many of my generation, I learned to program BASIC on a Sinclair ZX81 in my early teens; so, although the progression from lawyer to VBA developer is somewhat unusual, it was all perfectly logical.I have spent 20 years developing VBA for the legal profession. This has included document automation, custom VBA for batch document processing, RibbonX customisation, Access and SQL database builds, Excel programming ... in short, all the things you would expect a VBA developer to do. Throughout this period, I continued in a dual PSL/IT role - for instance, considering both the legal implications of anti-money laundering regulations (which I read, in full), and how new processes might be implemented from an IT perspective.
