Network Architect
CurrentLead engineer responsible for design, build, and operations of Poly's global networks. The network infrastructure at Poly is extensive, dynamic and diverse, and there are significant design and build opportunities that keep things moving at a fast pace. Project overview:• Lead Engineer for two large-scale acquisitions: Tasks included reconciliation of IP address space, design of integrated WAN topology, standardization of routing protocols, unification of monitoring platforms and consolidation of ITSM systems. This project touched every aspect of network technology.• Transformed Poly’s global IPv4 address space. New template supports global regions, engineering functions, discrete business units, and security segmentation. Project included overlay and migration tasks for 60 locations.• Developed and deployed the company’s IPv6 network including global IP address plan, IGP and BGP routing and dedicated WAN backbone. Native IPv6 Internet egress and provider BGP connections were established at the edge, along with FW and perimeter security.• Lead engineer for global WAN replacement. This project required running concurrent providers with interconnects during migration and developing scripts for migrating sites in a live production network.• Co-authored and implemented WAN contingency plans to provide redundancy for WAN and Internet connectivity. WAN redundancy utilized BGP over Internet-based VPNs, and Internet redundancy used weighted BGP to send traffic to regional datacenters for egress.• Project-lead for global FW replacement, all steps from design and roll-out. Project included standardization and migration for security policies, application gateways and NGFW features on three vendor's platforms (Cisco/Checkpoint/Palo Alto).• Authored templates for all aspects of Poly’s global network including naming conventions, switch/router configurations, VLAN usage, QoS tiers, security templates, FW objects, AAA paradigms, and routing protocol standards.
Chief Technology Officer
Employee #5 in an 80-person company, this start-up was “agile” before Agile. Initially responsible for design, build, and operations of a nationwide WiFi network deployed at state and federal courthouses, the scope was expanded to include hosted video conferencing services and design/deployment of a QoS-enabled ISP infrastructure geared for private communications between law offices. This energetic environment was operated on tight budget with an emphasis on cost-effective performance.Project overview:• Responsible for technical direction within the company: Created and maintained technical standards and implemented all technical strategy. Led technical POCs and managed integration of new technologies.• Built and managed a nationwide Wi-Fi network: Redesigned and expanded a single site deployment to service 75 state and federal courthouses. Scalable deployment was structured to support multiple use-cases with simple templates that were easily implemented. • Built and maintained the company’s ISP offering: This service provided a private QoS-enabled network for voice and video conferencing services at major law firms. The design included the IP address scheme, WAN design, QoS and bandwidth management, and all equipment configs. Ancillary to the offering was rollout of IPAM and Network Monitoring tools (SolarWinds) and an ITSM platform (ZenDesk) for equipment tracking and problem resolution.• Developed failover and disaster recovery procedures: Built and maintained two redundant datacenter environments to support the WiFi and ISP infrastructure. Design included redundant, private carrier connections and routing to support active/active and failover configurations for both WiFi and ISP offerings. • High achiever in demanding environment: Steady promotions and increased responsibilities in a role that required significant adaptation and mastery of new technologies.
