The functional management aspect of my job involved running a geographically dispersed team responsible for the writing of software and firmware applications made up of both internal and external resources. When I arrived at the company, the team was disjointed and some members felt isolated. My initial accomplishment was to build a team who worked cohesively together, felt comfortable in their roles, able to ask for help from peers and felt involved in the work of the team, department and company. Once at this point, i.e. working well together and delivering work efficiently and productively, the decision was taken to recruit a Software Development Manager enabling me to concentrate on project delivery.I have been responsible for delivering numerous projects of differing sizes, up to multi million pound budgets, managing multiple projects at a time. I drove these projects to ensure they were delivered to schedule but also allowed the flexibility to have a managed deviation from schedule , where required. Whilst driving the schedule I also ensured that the morale of the resources working on the project was kept high. These projects included both externally facing and internal company specific applications.Some of the projects used both external software houses and internal resources, in these instances I worked hard to develop a good working relationship both within the software house teams and with the overall project team; having a cohesive team is a critical aspect of being able to deliver a quality product to schedule. Other projects are fully resourced internally from the wider Group with people located throughout worldFor the past 6 years I have worked remotely and have continued to successfully manage projects with globally dispersed team members both within the Group, with other Groups and with external suppliers.I always ensure that my projects fully meet their objectives and are delivered on time to get the quality product required

Petrotechnics is a software house in Aberdeen that has written a Safe System of Work product whose main function is to control work permits and isolations for hazardous industries. Most of the current customers are Oil companies, and this system is used in both upstream and downstream environments. I was initially recruited to undertake three main roles; to lead the Support and Maintenance team, to be the QMS Manager and to lead the Systems Testing team. Managing the Support and Maintenance service was a largely customer facing role and as I was the first full time person to fulfill this role a lot of my initial time was spent developing customer feedback mechanisms along with standard processes and procedures to cater for the future expansion of the team. As the QMS Manager I was responsible for the management and control of the company’s Quality Management System (QMS) and I managed the project to achieve ISO 9001:2000 TickIT accreditation for the company.My role as the Systems Testing Team Leader expanded as the company expanded and this became my primary role. My job title was changed to Delivery Team Leader and my increased team comprised of 5 systems analysts, 4 configuration engineers, 8 system testers, 1 technical author and 1 DBA. My major task was to ensure that the projects were delivered on time to our customers whilst still ensuring the highest possible standards. This entailed tightly project managing all deliveries to ensure deadlines were always met. On a functional level I continuously worked with the team to monitor the procedures and the toolsets used to ensure they were working effectively and were still fit for purpose.

In this role I was responsible for coordinating the implementation of ATM’s and their upgrades to an agreed schedule. This entailed liaising with the banks, managing the engineers and issuing various reports. On a monthly basis I ensured that the bills were correctly prepared and issued.

WorldCom is a worldwide, global telecommunications company. I worked as the senior manager for the development team responsible for European IP Billing systems, some running bespoke legacy systems and some running Portal Infranet. I had a team of people working for me, made up of consultants, project managers, business analysts, designers, a QA/testing manager and programmers, some of whom were located in an offshore development centre in India. When I first took this role we had just moved from our central London offices to our new office location in Reading and my inherited team had suffered a 95% loss of staff which left me with a team of thirty people of whom only 5% had experience in the system. My main achievement was getting the staff to work as a team and to build up their knowledge and experience of the system whilst still meeting the project deadlines with quality and with eagerness on the part of the team.My first job with WorldCom was as a Senior Project Manager in the Production Readiness and Implementation team. My role was to ensure that the software delivered from development was in a suitable condition to implement into production and then project manage the implementation of the software, and all associated activities, into the production environment. I implemented a more open and consistent method of testing and implementation that people were confident to work with, i.e. by developing agreed, cross departmental processes and procedures.

Initially, I was recruited as a contractor to support the German Billing system which included the support of their production system, and the development of small projects. After a few months I was promoted to European Support Team Manager for both the UK and German production environments. This entailed ensuring that support issues were dealt with in priority order and delivered within defined SLAs whilst ensuring development projects were delivered to schedule.
