I remember the exact moment I decided that Supply Chain was the field I wanted to make a career out of. It was a snowy Tuesday evening in winter of 2004 at Syracuse University. I was sitting in one of my Manufacturing Engg. classes – Production Systems Design & Control – taught by Dr. Young Bai Moon and we were learning how to solve transportation problems using Linear Programming. It was then that I was struck by much I loved this field and its real-world applications. Supply Chain was logic, with just the right amount of math and statistics to keep the engineer in me interested. I had actually intended to make my way into the technical manufacturing industry, like my father. I was lucky that the program offered the University was inter-disciplinary between the LC Smith College of Engineering and the Whitman School of Management. It was on that day that I decided to switch career tracks and selected all the Industrial Engg. and Supply Chain courses that were offered.Prior to this I dabbled in various fields. I loved messing with everything digital, so chose PCME (Phy, Chem, Math, Electronics) after High School. Two years after learning all about NAND gates and semiconductor manufacturing I knew it wasn’t for me. I also loved dismantling things to figure out how they worked. (Tho I wasn’t always successful in putting them back together, much to my mom’s consternation). So I opted for a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. 4 years later - my head filled with the science behind Heat and Mass Transfer, Theory of Machines, and Strength of Materials - I was disillusioned once more and knew it wasn’t something I wanted to do for a living. I also had a brief stint in an advertising agency.Later on one of the best decisions I’ve made was joining the APICS San Diego Chapter’s Board of Directors in 2012. Being constantly involved with APICS has helped keep me up-to-date with all the technological improvements in Supply Chain and gave me access to other industries.
