Project Description: Over a four-year period, high school students from the Easton, Bangor, and Wilson area school districts assisted Nurture Nature Center officials in developing and implementing climate action plans to help surrounding communities better mitigate against climate and natural hazards. In the final three years of the project, students also collaborated with local artists to create publicly-displayed art installations that will help teach the community about climate change and the value of communal support in the wake of combatting hazards in the area. I was one of twelve students who participated in ‘Year 1’ of the project.Tasks included…- attending monthly meetings with the research team- attending meetings with local weather forecasting offices, emergency management officials, and otherrelevant stakeholders- coordinating and attending meetings with local city and township officials- preparing for and conducting interviews with local stakeholders including a Forks Township councilman, the then-superintendent of the Easton Area School District, and a local resident- note-taking and interview transcription - problem-solving which climate/natural hazards the community finds most impactful- attending Nurture Nature Center-sponsored CREATE Resilience community events- speaking at a Forks Township council meeting- community outreach
