I have a life sciences and pharmaceuticals patent practice for clients based in the United States, the UK, the rest of Europe and Japan. I have directed prosecution of patent families covering over 70 countries, but a high proportion of my work is prosecution, opposition and appeal work in the European Patent Office (EPO). I have handled about 80 opposition matters in the EPO over the course of my career to date. Examples of subjects on which I have helped clients include the following: rozanolixizumab, an antibody for treating autoimmune diseases; bimekizumab, an antibody for treating psoriasis; romosozumab, an antibody for treating osteoporosis; a platform technology for delivering proteins to the brain for treating neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases; gene editing and gene therapy technologies; a platform technology for oral delivery of vaccines; acellular whooping cough vaccines; manufacturing processes for antibodies and other biological molecules; small molecule drugs including enzalutamide, an important drug for prostate cancer; techniques for converting non-pluripotent cells into pluripotent cells; methods of engineering bacteria to produce chemicals for making polymers; drought-resistant plants; and diagnostic tests for heart disease and cancer.I was a scholar at Cambridge University and graduated from there in 1991 with a first class degree in Natural Sciences and specialisms in biochemistry and organic chemistry. I qualified as a European patent attorney in 1995 and as a UK chartered patent attorney in 1996.
