East Valley High School

During my career in the East Valley School District, I was fortunate enough to teach, coach, and advise nearly one thousand students and build relationships with local families, especially those with multiple students in the East Valley School District. Additionally, as an executive board member and treasurer of the teacher's union, we worked in collaboration with district administration to bargain multiple years of contracts helping navigate the aftermath of the McCleary Decision. East Valley School District was one of the few districts not forced to layoff teachers as a result of the constructive nature during bargaining.I remain connected to the East Valley School District as my wife (Jessica Ferry) is continuing to teach in the district at the Continuous Curriculum School (CCS). Go Knights!

Kent-Meridian High School

The Kent School District provided me the opportunity to grow as a leader in many ways. I was selected and trained to teach International Baccalaureate Math Standard Level (IB Calculus SL). Seeking to provide our students with greater access to college credits while attending high school, I organized and coordinated 5 teachers (including myself) to be trained and certified by the University of Washington to teach Math 120 (Precalculus) to our students as a dual-enrollment program.Additionally, in large part, due to Kent's refugee center, I was exposed to and embraced a variety of cultures and backgrounds. During my time at Kent-Meridian High School, over 90 different languages were spoken fluently in our halls. I will never forget the excitement and talent of our students during the Multi-Cultural Assembly; one of the many demonstrations in which these cultures were showcased.

Best summer job ever! I spent time maintaining DNR (Department of Natural Resources) land, maintaining our tools and vehicle, and fight forest fires. It's hard work putting out a fire with dirt but I've always found the harder the work the more rewarding it is when you do it right and get it done. Plus, the scenery was amazing!Favorite memory: We were tasked with watching the fire line overnight near Chewelah on a very steep slope. The fire was 7 acres when we arrived and contained. From an adjacent hilltop, we had a clear view of the fire heading into the evening. Occasionally a tree would torch sending a plume of incinerated pine needles about 150 feet above the tree tops lighting up the hillside and rock cliff just behind the fire.We placed our cans of chili in the ambers and started walking the fire line. Visibility was limited because of the smoke rolling down the hill as the cold air moved in for the night. The line looked good as we approached a rock scree. Crack the Crash! A massive tree had fallen somewhere above us in the dark. Of course, we're in the middle of a rock scree with no trees to hide behind so we listened as it grew closer and strained to see into the black smoke. The trunk ended up tumbling between us and broke through the fire line.The fire was contained again at 21 acres the next day and finally put out without damage to any structures or humans.

Great summer job! Helped me pay for college and learn more about tools, equipment, construction, and leadership. Worked mostly with building concrete forms, poring and floating mud, and breaking the forms down to start all over again.

Great summer job that helped pay for college! It was always fun to meet new folks and learn about what brought them to town, what they were looking to do, and where they were from. It was my responsibility to know what events were happening around the city, give advice on where to go for a good time depending on what they were looking for and orchestrate pickups and drop-offs to the airport and other venues. It was fun to talk to folks like Kenny Loggins and the Teutuls from Orange County Choppers.
