About Patrick K. Clancey

I was living in Kuala Lumpur when I received a fax saying the company I’d worked for my entire professional life had gone bankrupt and there wasn’t even money for a ticket back to the U.S! Economic prospects back home were bleak, so I chose to remain in Asia. Shortly thereafter, another fax arrived – this time from the head of sales and marketing for a NASDAQ listed enterprise. “I’m going to be in Southeast Asia and I’d like to meet you. Let’s talk about whether you’d like to represent us.” I DID team with that company and so began my entrepreneurial journey. Today, as a FocalPoint Certified Business & Executive Coach, I look back on this early challenge and I recognize the entrepreneurial spirit of resilience and the ability to pivot and innovate that would shape the next 30 years of my career. Those qualities are what took me from being unemployed and on my own to founding Traffic Safety Engineering, later known as Safetyverse, a manufacturing and trading company in highway safety products, intelligent transportation solutions, and automatic enforcement systems. They kept me from settling for just selling our products, and instead spurred me on to work with local bodies in Malaysia to develop national standards requiring the use of crash cushions. They led me to establish Metroverse, a trading company for internet routing equipment that revolutionized broadband access throughout Malaysia. And they are what I draw on when I coach entrepreneurs and small business owners to reconnect with their purpose and passion so they can break through to the next level in their business and personal life. I know how to step back and take in the big picture. I know how to get to the root of a challenge and alchemize it into an opportunity. And I know how to help you do the same. I’ve been a coach in the addiction recovery space for nearly a decade and a youth mentor for all of my adult life. Now I’ve married those roles and my extensive entrepreneurial experience with the industry-leading training and certification offered by FocalPoint to bring proven coaching and training solutions to your business. Message me here to start a conversation about how coaching can help you reconnect with the passion that led you to start your business. Director Of Business Development | Sales & Marketing | Finances & P&L | Contracts & Negotiations

Current

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

My entrepreneurial journey began with Safetyverse, and the skills I acquired in this experience – both in practical business acumen and the soft skills of communication and relationship building – serve as a solid foundation for my coaching today. When I founded Safetyverse (originally Traffic Safety Engineering – TSE) I faced a diverse market spanning multiple southeast Asian countries, each with unique conditions and requirements. The one thing they all had in common: There was little to no demand for my product.Motivated by the drive to positively impact peoples’ lives and safety and the opportunity I saw when I envisioned the market in all its potential, I developed a specific market penetration strategy for each country and spearheaded its implementation.First, I created demand. I developed a national standard for highway safety in Malaysia that incorporated the use of crash cushions; this standard was widely adopted and became the industry norm.Second, I surveyed the competitive landscape and discovered there was one other thing each country had in common: high import duties that severely hampered sales. I crafted a multi-pronged approach to localize product manufacture, relying on a combination of transferring less sensitive technology and outsourcing aspects of production to a local manufacturer. Continuing my innovation journey, in 2015 I refashioned TSE into Safetyverse to allow us to address new opportunities in new markets. By designing and executing this new strategy, Safetyverse was able to regain the leading market share position for crash cushions in our region. With the onset of the pandemic, I leveraged my change management skills to yet again pivot my business model from brick-and-mortar to virtual, moving from a permanent to contract-based workforce. With these cost reductions I lowered our sales break-even point, ensuring the business would thrive even amidst turbulent economic times.

Executive Director | End-To-End Management & Financial Oversight | New Business Model Development

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I founded Metroverse as a trading company for internet routing equipment, switch gear, and best-in-class network automation software for broadband access networks and data centers, running it simultaneously alongside Traffic Safety Engineering. With Metroverse I applied the entrepreneurial approach that served me so well in the traffic safety industry to the IT sector, managing all aspects of the firm from liaising with our principal in Europe, acquiring our technology from Sweden, administering HR locally, and crafting innovative sales and marketing strategies that ushered in the advent of the open-access broadband business model in Malaysia. The conventional IT business model at the time required all competitors to build out their own infrastructure as a vehicle for providing their services. Crafting and presenting business cases and sales strategies, I convinced two Malaysian telecommunications companies to adopt a radically different approach: They built the infrastructure and multiple competitors paid to use it to deliver their software solutions. The result? Users benefitted from a choice of streamlined and cost-effective broadband solutions as service providers abandoned the massively inefficient model that necessitated duplicating resources. My experience with Metroverse drove home that the skills needed to take a business from limited prospects to unlimited potential are the same across industry verticals: Maintaining an awareness of the big picture so that knowledge and creativity are not siloed and connections are not stymied, and a willingness to meet the traditional focal points of product, place, price, and promotion with an openness to assessing the competitive landscape, fostering an empowered team, developing compelling strategies, and dedicating yourself to continuous improvement. These are the skills I work with my coaching clients to foster and capitalize on as they lean into their passion to drive their business to greater success.

Jun 2007 - Jun 2014

Technical Director | Cross-Cultural Business Relationships | Project Development And Implementation

Chemcrete Asia Limited

Hong Kong

This role with Chemcrete provided me with valuable insight and experience that shaped my ability to see the whole picture in the successful connection of product or service and target market. With Metroverse, Traffic Safety Engineering, and Safetyverse, I worked on the distributor side of the equation; here, I served as Technical Director for the principal, managing distributors in 10 Asian countries. In addition to learning the distribution model environment from the principal’s side, I also became more fluent in the nuances of the international market and established a foothold in the region as a trusted business partner. This local knowledge, experiential understanding of how the person on the other side of the table thinks, and interpersonal cache would serve me well as I piloted successive ventures over the next two decades. My role in Chemcrete also expanded my expertise in the highway safety industry as I prepared structural engineering designs for highway projects and wrote tender specifications and bid documentation. My initiative in securing large-scale road construction projects in the region paid off as well in major wins like landing a two-year contract to supply materials for all road projects undertaken by the City of Seoul, Korea, and negotiating a partnership agreement with Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Tokyo, Japan.

May 1990 - Oct 1994

Technical Director | New Territory Expansion & Product Launch | International Sales Leadership

Chemcrete Technologies (Mexico) Sa De Cv

Mexico City (Ddf), Mexico

As NAFTA opened the doors for the North American Free Trade Zone, formed a joint venture with a major Mexican construction firm. I was working in Belgium at the time, but was tapped to run point on the JV, acting as the partner representative for Chemcrete.I provided technical expertise on behalf of the U.S. technology provider to the operating and management team in Mexico, spearheading the sale of specialty chemicals for use in the highway construction industry throughout Mexico and Latin America. In addition to gaining valuable exposure to and experience in a wide range of corporate management disciplines, I was also able to steer the JV towards significant growth on a short timeline, securing a commercial-scale project within the first year of operations and achieving $2M in sales in the first 15 months. In an industry marked by notoriously lengthy sales cycles these were major wins, and solidified the expansion of our product line into this new territory.I also understood that being offered this role meant that a high degree of trust had been placed in me at this early stage in my career. My managers saw my potential and gave me the opportunity to stretch into it. As I grew in my career and took on greater responsibilities and more executive positions, I kept that lesson and made it a hallmark of my leadership to hire and take a personal interest in nurturing talent.

1988 - 1990 ~2 yrs

International Production Manager | Quality Control | Production Capacity Expansion

Chemcrete Co. Europe

Brussels, Belgium

In my role as International Production Manager I oversaw chemical production and quality control functions at chemical production facilities in Europe and the United States. In my first role with Chemcrete in California, I had developed a new and streamlined manufacturing process, which I successfully steered from laboratory to pilot to full-scale production. Building on that success, I now headed the team to construct production facilities in the U.K. – one in Newcastle and one in Manchester – expanding our manufacturing capacity from one to three facilities.

1987 - 1988 ~1 yr

Product Manager | Corporate Finance & Venture Capital Funding | Contract Law & Negotiation

Enviroco, Inc.

San Mateo, Ca

A turning point in my career, my work with EnviroCo marks the first time I was tapped to move from my highly technical focus as a chemical engineer to an expanded role in management. Chemcrete created EnviroCo as a separate entity to handle the distribution of an environmentally friendly road line marking material. I was hand-selected to work directly with the CEO to manage the product development and go-to-market strategy for the innovative paint product throughout the U.S. and in six European countries. In addition to directing product development and creating a comprehensive marketing strategy, I also worked to secure corporate financing for the start-up, including venture capital funding. As we launched in various domestic and foreign markets, I helped steer negotiations, gaining familiarity with contract law and the intricacies of international business.

1986 - 1987 ~1 yr

Production & Research Engineer | Process & Product Optimization | Research & Development

Chemcrete International

San Mateo, Ca

In my first role with Chemcrete, I contributed significantly to product and process optimization by researching and developing improvements to our manufacturing process as well as our product line. I spearheaded the upscaling of the revamped manufacturing process from research lab to pilot, and then to full-scale production in a manufacturing facility. My research related to the chemical modification of asphalt as a road building material led to the granting of international patents, and affording me valuable insight into the intricacies of patent law.
