The California Department of Business Oversight is an administrative agency that supervises and regulates licensed financial institutions. I interned with the Enforcement Division, which enforces the laws under the Department's jurisdiction through civil and administrative actions.While interning with the Department of Business Oversight, I worked on many cases involving securities regulation, mortgage loan origination, finance lending, franchises, and deferred deposit transactions. My responsibilities included:(1) Drafting pleadings, motions, default judgment petitions, administrative orders, and discovery requests for civil and administrative hearings;(2) Drafting settlement agreements on behalf of the California government;(3) Analyzing bank records, private placement memoranda, promissory notes, examiner reports,and other documents to ensure compliance with securities, mortgage, franchise, and finance lending statutes and regulations;(4) Drafting a legislative proposal that advocated that the California legislature adopt proposed statutory amendments;(5) Conducting intensive legal research and drafting memoranda to assist the Department's attorneys in determining the probability of success in bringing enforcement actions; and(6) Communicating with witnesses and consumers and drafting declarations on their behalf.

As Executive Lead Articles Editor, I ensured that lead articles were suitable for publication. My responsibilities included:(1) Reading, analyzing, and ultimately selecting articles for publication;(2) Communicating with authors and associate editors regarding publication issues;(3) Leading a team of associate editors to adhere to deadlines while promoting teamwork;(4) Editing the grammar, organization, and content of articles selected for publication;(5) Verifying that all information citing a particular source was actually backed up by the cited source (i.e., source-checking); and(6) Formatting all citations to proper Bluebook format.

New Media Rights is a non-profit program that provides legal services for content creators and business entities. New Media Rights is also actively engaged in public policy work.While interning with New Media Rights, I assisted clients with many different issues involving intellectual property issues. My responsibilities included:(1) Analyzing music and films to help content creators determine whether their use of copyrighted material qualified under the fair use doctrine;(2) Drafting a scholarly paper (which was submitted to the United States Copyright Office) that proposed exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's Prohibition on Circumvention of Copyright Protection Systems for Access Control Technologies;(3) Drafting licensing agreements, royalty agreements, and other contracts; and(4) Assisting clients with registering their work with the Copyright Office.

I educated first year law school students on property law on a weekly basis. I was responsible for assisting an entire section (60+ students) in their education.I created outlines for students and explained the fundamentals of various first year property law subjects such as adverse possession, possessory estates and future interests, and conveyancing. I also taught the students how to analyze facts and law in order to write effective case briefs and essays for exams.

The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) is an organization that assists young individuals who experience issues with homelessness. While interning with NAEHCY, my responsibilities included:(1) Conducting legal research to highlight the varying definitions of "homelessness" among federal regulations and statutes, and state statutes;(2) Drafting memoranda regarding the varying definitions; and(3) Attending clinical hours in order to assist homeless youth with legal issues.
