As part of the Department of Energy-Plant Research Laboratory in the lab of Dr. Christoph Benning, I primarily investigated the mechanisms and regulation of synthesizing the unusual lipid 16:1d3-trans fatty acid that is present in leaves of essentially all higher plants.

As a member of the Department of Plant Biology I was able to work in the lab Dr. John Ohlrogge a short time before his retirement. My research:• Applied RNA-Seq profiling of two closely-related plant species, Physaria fendleri and Camelina sativa, to investigate how some plants have evolved to accumulate hydroxy fatty acids and to identify new strategies for engineering plants with enhanced unusual fatty acid accumulation.• Identified dynamic, radiolabeled metabolite pools during lipid droplet biogenesis and oil accumulation of developing wildtype and unusual fatty acid accumulating Brassica napus and Camelina sativa embryos.

As a graduate student I worked in the Center for Plant Lipid Research with advisor Dr. Kent Chapman. My dissertation was the titled "Development of Enabling Technologies to Visualize the Plant Lipidome" which essentially designed and implemented new ways to measure lipids in tissues, cells, and subcellular compartments.My research:• Developed methods and applications in mass spectrometry imaging that revealed spatial heterogeneity in plant oil-accumulating tissues. Developed new lipidomics methods to profile the distribution of fatty acids in membrane and storage lipids, and customized methods for computational analysis of mass spectrometric datasets.• Developed lipidomics profiling of individual lipid droplets revealing heterogeneity in organellar lipid composition.• Characterized the plant lipid droplet proteins LDAP and CGI-58 and their role in accumulating oils in vegetative tissues.• Established non-invasive methods for quantifying cottonseed oil and protein for assisting breeders in selecting desired seed traits.
