About Pau Diaz Gallifa
Jumping into the world of software development, I was impressed by how much impact we can have on people's lives. My first taste of this was in 2016 at Alayacare. I completed my first data migration for a customer on a Friday, the next Monday was the go-live and we got recognition from that customer sending pics from their team celebrating. It was a basic project, but the joy of seeing all of it working and the enthusiasm of the customer was mind-blowing. Ever since, I've dedicated all my efforts to software development, first as an individual contributor and most recently as an engineering manager.During my first years as a data developer, I led hundreds of projects bringing customer's data into our systems. Ideated, designed, and crafted features increasing the efficiency of our data onboarding processes. It was after a few years that I got to lead an engineering team. That was game-changing. That team was focused on optimizing operations and building self-serve tools until a point where nowadays most of the data onboarding projects are run through the self-serve web app. Becoming a senior EM has been even more exciting, actively contributing to cross-department initiatives to improve the quality of deployed code, or customer onboarding journey to reduce time to value among others. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. Biking is my other passion, I feel free when riding with friends, giving it all and getting back home exhausted helps me in so many ways. I am also the husband of an astrophysicist, so it is very common that we end up chatting about intermediate black holes, neutron stars, instruments, or just about the last hot discovery made in the field.I definitely love software engineering, solving problems, and being part of a talented team to provide better outcomes in the healthcare industry.
Listed skills include Python, Data Analysis, Physics, Science, and 33 others.

Senior Data Developer And Tech Lead
In my role as Senior Data Developer and Tech Lead, I directed both the operational management of data migrations for all new clients and the continuous development and improvement of migration tools to meet AlayaCare's growth needs. I transformed the migration process from a locally managed workflow to a scalable, Dockerized solution hosted in Jenkins, ensuring efficiency and reliability. By coordinating with customers to gather feedback, I aligned our technical solutions with their needs and business objectives. Additionally, I mentored a team of data developers, guiding them into impactful individual contributors. This experience enriched my understanding of technical execution, customer engagement, and team development.Key achievements:- Data Loading OptimizationSpearheaded the development of a pipeline incorporating SQL-based data loaders, achieving a tenfold increase in data loading efficiency. This core feature remains integral to AlayaCare’s data migration operations.- Testing Framework LeadershipCoordinated the design and implementation of an integration and unit testing framework using Pytest, covering over 100 entities and 200+ endpoints. This framework bolstered the reliability and consistency of data migrations across the organization.- Mentorship and Team Development: Successfully mentored and developed a team of three data developers based in Montreal, fostering their growth into well-established individual contributors with significant impacts on the company.- Operational and Developmental Leadership: Led both the operational management of data migrations for all new customers transitioning to our platform and the ongoing development and improvement of the migration tools to support scalability and efficiency.
Data Integration Specialist
AlayaCare is an end-to-end home health care software platform, focused on providing better patient outcomes through the use of robust clinical documentation, exceptional back office solutions, and next-generation technology such as integrated Portals, Virtual Care, Remote Patient Monitoring and Machine Learning. At Alayacare I am leading data integration. To do so, I am daily working with our people at Toronto, Montreal, and Sidney and with clients on Canada, US, and Australia among others. My day to day consists of deploying/maintain ETL tools through object-oriented Python methods to clean/parse/load multi-source structured and unstructured data. I do work also with databases, pulling or running data in (MySQL and PSQL). I am also leading an AI project based on building and maintaining machine-learning predictive models. Currently working on a multi-class classifier to improve the quality of our client's services.
Data Scientist
PapayaNaranja is a creative, young and small marketing-based company that offers new communication channels to their customers (mostly from small business). My role was to analyze and define target profiles and to establish better connections between the company and its social network followers.
Data Science Intensive Bootcamp
This is a 100+ hours online course that covers some of the most recurrent topics in Data Science. These topics include programming skills training (mostly Python), data wrangling (Pandas), storytelling (data visualization: Matplotlib, Bokeh, etc), inferential statistics, machine learning and the realization of a original capstone project. The inferential statistics section covers: population-, sample- and sampling-distributions, normal distribution, central limit theorem (CLT), confidence intervals, accuracy vs precision, Hypothesis testing, p-values, decision errors, significance vs confidence level, statistical vs practical significance, comparing 2 means, t-distribution, comparing more than 2 means, Anova test, Bonferroni correction, bootstrapping, inference for categorical variables, chi-square GOF and independent tests, and correlation. The machine learning section includes the supervised and unsupervised learning approaches. The supervised learning techniques involve regression models and classification methods such as Naive Bayes, decision trees, and SVM. I also worked with clustering methods such as K-means. Other techniques such as PCA for data visualization and dimensionality reduction and metrics (precision, recall and F1) have been covered as well.
Phd
I successfully accomplished the objectives and challenges proposed for my Ph.D. in Solid State Physics. The results obtained shed light on two key points in the field: (1) a synthetic route to design magnetic dryness sensitive materials with a tunable porous capacity in function of dryness (potential application in gas storage) and (2) the activation temperature control on molecular magnets (potential application on memory storage devices). I used several analytical techniques mostly coming from awarded beam times (from synchrotron and neutron radiation facilities). I published 11 refereed papers in highly-ranked European and American scientific journals. I also gave more than 10 scientific talks and was involved in lecturing Physics to undergraduate students. During the course of my Ph.D. I was awarded 12 months of traveling funding to stay at the Institute Laue-Langevin (Grenoble, France) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston, USA).
Ph.D. Visiting Student
I visited the MIT during my Ph.D. The aim of this stay was to dive into specific methods for measuring gas storage capacity and electrical conductivity in molecular materials. I gained experience in chemistry procedures such as working in glove-box and cation exchange (post-synthetic technique). The weekly group meetings enhanced my data visualisation and reporting skills.
Ph.D. Visiting Student
During my Ph.D. I visited several times the Institut Laue-Langevin for 2 long-term stays (more than 2 months) and several weeklong experiments. The ILL is a facility with a nuclear reactor used for neutron research purposes. I analyzed tonnes of data from neutron experiments I performed in this institute. I worked hand by hand with scientists and engineers from the Diffraction team. Great city and nice people!
Research Assistant
Right after finishing the master degree I landed a job in a research group focused on molecular magnetism. I was mainly focused on using techniques such as single crystal and powder diffraction and magnetometry and getting a deep understanding of synthesis processes. I designed and performed experiments to grow crystalline materials looking for specific properties.
