About Paul Edwards

After 26 years working in technology, I now have an opportunity to pursue my passion. Lead Upwards is a boutique coaching and consulting firm, focusing on helping you achieve your goals. When I first floated the idea with family, friends, and colleagues, the most common reaction was, “Why???” (with all three question marks). I trained as a teacher, and have always enjoyed helping people learn and grow. Even in my near 30 years in technology, I was (for the most part) less about the hard technical side, and more about how people use technology to improve their working lives. The people side meant more to me.I remember one day being pursued by someone who looked like an outlaw biker in Collins St Melbourne. He was yelling my name and running towards me. I’d had no associations with biker gangs, and I was in equal parts curious and scared! He caught up with me, and introduced himself — a staff member at a previous client. All he wanted to do was say thanks! The work I had done on process efficiency improvements at his employer saved him 90 minutes a day, and, as he said, “That’s an extra 90 minutes I get to spend with my kids each day. Thank you so much.”I walked away feeling a million dollars, and I realized that it was outcomes like this which gave me deep satisfaction. It was about the people. Since them I’ve been involved in mentoring and graduate programs at companies where I have worked. It has been extremely rewarding watching these people grow, and has also led to lifelong friendships. In 2017 and 2018 I completed formal qualifications in this area, to ensure I was providing the best possible service to clients, and not simply being a well-meaning amateur. So in answer to that very good question, “Why???”, it’s because it’s something I value and I know gets good results for my clients. I enjoy getting up every day to help people help themselves and learn and grow. It’s captured in nine words: “Enabling people to gain more from life and work."

Listed skills include Systems Analysis, Coaching, It Service Management, Itsm Enterprise Architecture, and 41 others.

Manager, Enterprise Operations & Governance

Iag

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Continuing on from the contract position in a permanent role, I've continued to work in cyber vulnerability remediation, various IT Service Management disciplines, and Evergreen. Key achievements in the last couple of years have included:• the development of a happy and dedicated team, with a wonderful culture and work ethic;• a 74% reduction in the size of IAG's attack surface from vulnerabilities;• successful co-ordination of IAG's response to log4j;• improvement in the ITSM processes I inherited;• involvement in IAG's Women in Technology mentoring program;• simplification of management reporting to drive faster and better decision making; and• management of a recurring AUD5 million program focused on strategic, structural, improvements to IAG's vulnerability response capability. There's more to it than just the above, so feel free to get in touch if you'd like to know more.

Dec 2020 - Apr 2023

Manager, Enterprise Operations & Governance

Iag

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Initially brought in to drive a cyber vulnerability team transitioning from delivery to BAU, I also added managing Major Incident, Problem, and Change Management. For fun, I also took over the rollout of an Evergreen initiative across the technology organization, which is focused on the careful currency of technology stacks across the ecosystem to reduce risk across various dimensions. Enjoyed working with the people so much that when there was an opportunity to convert to perm I took it!

Manager, Red Team

Anz

Melbourne, Australia

The ANZ Banking Group is one of Australia's Big 4 banks with over 10 million customers worldwide, nearly 42,000 employees, and more than $580 billion in assets. As Manager of Cyber Security's Red Team, I lead a team who has possibly the coolest mandate in banking: to break into the bank.We work with the bank's threat intelligence team to understand which actors are providing the biggest threats to the bank, research to understand and mimic their methods, and then execute an attack on the bank using those methods. Once the attack is completed, we sit down with the bank's Blue Team to analyse what worked, what didn't, and how the Blue Team can improve the bank's defences. And we generally learn a lot about ourselves too — how we as a Red Team can improve for next time too. It's not all just attacking the bank though. I'm still looking after the department's budget; mentoring staff (both my team and through ANZ's various mentoring programs); running ANZ's airport simulation to improve understanding of the technology supply chain; providing a sounding board for peers; and driving Cyber Security Operations' restructure under ANZ's New Ways of Working.

Dec 2017 - Sep 2018

Manager, Cyber Security Governance

Anz

Melbourne, Australia

SECURITY GOVERNANCE ♦ MANAGE CYBER SECURITY AUDIT AND RISK ♦ ENSURE REGULATORY COMPLIANCE AND REPORTING OBLIGATIONS ARE METThe ANZ Banking Group is one of Australia's Big 4 banks with over 10 million customers worldwide, nearly 49,000 employees, and more than $580 billion in assets. As Manager of Cyber Security Governance, I lead a team who manage risks and audit issues as well as being key inputs into developing risk-based arguments for capital funding for improvement initiatives in the cyber security space across the bank. Would you like that in English? The work we do guides and supports senior executives of the bank make the best decisions possible to keep the bad guys out.And I am still doing my strategy role as well, currently helping out with the rollout of a big data solution which will see behavioural analysis detect sophisticated attacks on the bank far earlier than existing methods.

Oct 2016 - Feb 2018

Manager, Global Operations Strategy

Anz

Melbourne, Australia

STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT ♦ OPERATIONAL PLAN DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION ♦ UNIFICATION OF DISPARATE CULTURES AND PROCESSESThe ANZ Banking Group is one of Australia's Big 4 banks with over 10 million customers worldwide, nearly 49,000 employees, and more than $36 billion in revenue. As Manager Global Operations Strategy within the Technology Service Management division, my immediate objective is to move all units and geographies of ANZ Technology Shift Operations (including recent acquisitions) to using a single set of service management processes and a customer-focused culture.2017 update: That objective went well. We got 200+ processes across three geographies down to just under 100, increasing the number of shared processes as well, from three to almost 20.Subsequently, I ran the project to build the Global Security Operations Centre at ANZ -- we built it on a shoestring budget in less than five months, and then it went on to win multiple industry awards. I was fortunate enough to work with a great team, each of whom were committed to delivering what ended up being an outstanding facility in Melbourne and Manila. There were five challenges we faced: the physical build; process documentation; staff recruitment and training; satisfying regulators; and navigating intra-group contracts and requirements.Six months in, both Manila and Melbourne were demonstrating world best practice on the usual measures for SOCs. These metrics have been maintained in the subsequent three years. The facility is running at opex costs 68% below the previous outsource provider, so there's a win for the bean counters too.
