As a Ministry of Education research scholarship recipient, I pursued graduate level research full time. The first 6 months of my program included intensive Japanese language study at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. This was followed by intensive preparation for Seijo University's handwritten graduate school entrance examination. After having passed to become a regular graduate student, I pursued my study of Japanese folk culture and anthropology. In my final year, I conducted field work in Takayama city investigating the city's intercultural education condition and potential. This included conducting interviews with teachers and educators as well as home visits to families with a multicultural background.Personal achievement was completing my degree in 2 years and writing my thesis in Japanese as well as passing JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) level 2 and HSK (Chinese Language Proficiency Test) level 4.

Coming directly off of the education and language success I found as a JET participant in Japan, I aimed to replicate that same experience in China. Joining EMW gave me another rural placement opportunity to once again dig deep. This time, as part of a multi-national 4 member English teaching team, I was responsible for the planning and execution of high school English immersion classes.

I spent 3 years as a participant of the world's largest exchange teaching program in an idyllic central Japanese mountain village. Fortunate to teach junior high and elementary school students at 4 incredibly small schools, I had the opportunity to delve deeper into my local community than other participants. The cultural exchange, language study and educational experiences deeply influenced the direction of my subsequent professional direction.Personal achievement was successfully passing the JLPT levels 4 and 3 during the three years.
