Paul Rutter is an Associate Professor Emeritus, educator, writer, musician, internationally published songwriter, composer and music producer. Head of Music until July 2019 at Southampton Solent University, led a team of twenty-four academic educators across the Music Programme. Paul has developed a large HE music scheme, which has over 450 students on a range of BA music courses, developed with his team. His monograph The Music Industry Handbook, published by Routledge in 2011 and 2016, has emerged as a key text for those reading and studying the music industries. Paul led on music industry in the programme and has developed a lecture series and industry knowledge strand running from level four through to level six for all music scheme students. He has lectured as a guest in UK, Europe and Overseas institutions. As an industry practitioner, Paul is a regular on-air guest contributor, commentator and research consultant in BBC regional media concerning popular music news concepts and issues. He has over 30 years' experience in the music industries and Paul’s research enthusiastically engages in the evolutionary global music industries ecosystem. He acted as Principal Investigator in a music industry research project launched at Solent in 2016 - 'The Musical Life of a City: Southampton'. To contextualise his lectures, Paul works closely with a wide network of high-profile music industry professionals. In 2015 he procured a Music Academic Partnership with Solent University and UK Music, London. He ensures that his socially inclusive music lectures and workshops are delivered with passion and enthusiasm. Paul’s mission is to ensure that learners from a wide variety of backgrounds are able to increase their personal knowledge concerning a complex global music ecosystem and, if so desired, seek new personal opportunities within it.
