About Paul Brooks
From a young age I have been curious about how things work and why things are the way they are. From taking apart toys and reassembling them, to mapping out the levels on Manic Miner on my CPC2168; I’ve always wanted to understand what’s going on “under the hood”. My ability to see past the outer casing, or UI, to the inside workings enables me to quickly understand the behaviours of objects and systems to troubleshoot, improve or create my own. I’ve always loved creating things; whether it was rockets from loo rolls, RC planes, a MegaDrive controller built into a pair of gloves or a woodwork shop built from the ground up. I like to be able to point to something and say “I made that”. I take as much enjoyment from building a finely finished walnut headphone stand as I do from taking a photo of the wedding couple that makes their parents tear up with joy. My newly found keenness for coding has given me another outlet for my creativity; the satisfaction gained from an elegantly written script that achieves the required outcome gets my heart pumping. #geekI have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, I love learning new skills. If I don’t know how to do something I'll find out and practise until I am good at it. I figure, if someone else can do that, why can’t I? Online learning has taught me so much in every area of my life, building, woodwork, photography, coding, IT skills. Codecademy and LinkedIn Learning have my monthly subscriptions and I get my money’s worth out of them 10 fold, sometimes to my wife’s dismay (she’s banned coding on the sofa!)The last 20 years of my working life has been data, data, data. I’ve extracted, cleaned, merged, sorted, analysed, modelled, verified, visualised and explained countless sets of financial data. My SQL, Excel and VBA skills have all been learnt on the job; I thrive on collaboration; knowledge sharing and group problem solving is invaluable. I have been interested in coding and programming for many years, but have not had the time or opportunity to really pick it up. Redundancy from LBG gave me the space to start from scratch, learn the skills required and bring with me all I have learnt from 2 decades of technical roles.As of September 2021, I have had the position of Senior Business Intelligence Analyst at RWS in Maidenhead.
