Growing up in my father's family business was a great way to learn the ropes from the ground up! But in hindsight, it also had many hidden disadvantages that didn't become apparent to me until many years later. Looking back to my 35 year-old self, I thought I knew it all. I had buckets of confidence, drive and business success "to date" but how quickly things can change. The major factor I lacked was the support of a Mentor or Advisor and consequently I made some decisions that ended up to be life-changing, (not in a good way!). Fast forward 25 years and my SME business experience has been complemented by working in Operations at a senior level in a multi-national business. I'm now in a position to share my experience with others and help them Plan to succeed. It's clear that no one person is good at everything. Many SME owners are great technicians and have been trained in their trade or profession, but few have had any training in how to run a successful business. Asking for "help" has never been something that Kiwi Business Owners, (guys?), have been very good at however, things are changing. In the U.S and other countries, Business Advisors and the whole notion of having a Coach has had much greater acceptance for years and I'm glad that's now the trend in Aotearoa.The starting point is for me as an Advisor to understand the business, not the technical side as the Business Owner usually has this nailed. I dig deep to understand the actual business side before making any recommendations. It's equally important to understand the Owner and what they personally want in their life as this is inseparable from their Business Plan. All in all, it's a collaborative approach where we hold the business owner accountable to do what he/she commits to but all along providing the support required. In this way, things get done and progress is made. Importantly, we help Business Owners get the basics right before embarking on any plan for growth.Personally, I love working with SME Owners.
