• In 1985 I became employed on a full-time basis as an assistant farm manager of just over a 1,000-hectare mixed farming operation. I subsequently became the overall farm manager. In 1997 I leased the entire operation.
• A dairy herd of, on average, 280 cows in milk, plus followers, comprised of Friesian and Jersey cattle. We relied on artificial insemination on our herd to ensure progressive genetics. our milk was supplied to Nestle.
• Beef herd of, on average, 350 units at any one time, including two small studs of Hereford and poled Afrikander’s to produce our own bulls. We did a limited amount of artificial insemination on our beef herd.
• A flock of, on average, 2000 Dohne Merino sheep, for production of wool and mutton for the local market.
• Forage cropping of maize for silage, and supplementing feed. Various rye grasses and lucerne were utilized as pastures/hay for all the enterprises, more specifically for dairy. Our irrigation techniques included center.
• Cash crops of maize, sunflowers, wheat, smuts finger grass, teff and eragrostis hay were produced annually. These were largely dry land.
