Peter is Professor of Engineering for Sustainable Development at the University of Cambridge. He took up this post in September 2000, after 30 years in professional practice in civil engineering in UK and internationally. He was Director of the Centre of Engineering for Sustainable Development until 2016. The research he leads is focused on the integration of sustainable development into decision making, and resilience in large infrastructure projects worldwide. Research has concentrated on energy efficiency in buildings, retrofit in buildings, large scale infrastructure projects, waste in construction and demolition, methods of measurement and assessment, knowledge exchange, and resilience in infrastructure.He is a former Vice-President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and Founder and Vice-President of RedR - Engineers for Disaster Relief. He has been a member of the Arup Foundation Advisory Board, Vice Chair of the DEFRA Scientific Advisory Council, and a member of the Government’s Project Board for the Severn Tidal Power Study. He was a Non-Executive Director of Buro Happold Limited.
