As Head of Solution Architecture I created and lead a small team, and I am the owner of all architectural aspects relating to customer and internal divisional systems. I am responsible for all solution designs, reviewing and taking ownership of those created by the team, as well as those of my own creation. I have certification from the British Computing Society in Enterprise and Solution Architecture and currently adopt TOGAF. I represent the Division on a number of technology boards and architectural communities, and have personally established the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Operations Group. This is a cross-divisional group which is responsible for leading on the principles, design patterns, and best practices of services in AWS. I am considered a leader within the company on AWS, and am currently the main point of contact between OUP and AWS, being one of the early adopters of the infrastructure, and having organised training, and presentations of new features and services. I ensure that all solutions strongly deliver to non-functional requirements that meet performance and availability; are scalable and robust; recover to point and time objectives; are secure (including hardening of application and infrastructure) and resilient. Solutions always include capacity planning, backup and recovery, load profiles, and have full plans for service delivery.My current projects include:• a new subscription management system• a new events management system• a data project; linking disparate data together from internal and cloud-based networks to enable enhanced reporting capabilities for increased business insights• transforming the use of AWS across the company

The Technical Manager role evolved greatly over the period I held the post. The context transitioned from one in which the Division produced small amounts of digital content, to the introduction of complex services, platforms, products, and content. The Technical Manager role oversaw the creation and management of all technical roles during this time.The final stages of this role saw my responsibilities transitioning into solution architecture, focussing on solution design with a view to strategically managing our growing technology landscape. At this stage the role oversaw all new developments, integrations, and quality assurance across the Divisional technology landscape.Key aspects of this role included:> Delivering and embedding large customer facing platforms on cloud infrastructure.> Working with business leads to ensure that the Division’s digital strategy transformed and kept pace with the changing UK educational market, including identifying, planning and implementing new strategic developments such as platforms, and content workflows.> Reviewing technology gained during acquisitions, presenting and costing options, and designing the solution for integration. Other elements of the role included:> Overseeing the Technical Team and their work, including in-house software development, user experience, interface design, customer technical support, and QA and test management work.> Implementing content standards for interoperability across platforms, gaining specific knowledge of SCORM, CC, QTI, Caliper, and xAPI> Managing the division’s internal and external technical support.> Researching new technologies, keeping up-to-date with IT industry developments (particularly those applicable to schools), ensuring that the Division developed robust, innovative and appropriate digital services, products, and content.

> Design, develop, and test the division’s websites, and browser-based CD-ROMs with xHTML content.> Manage the customer support team looking after all support for our products and websites> Develop templates, code-libraries, and used repeatable patterns for xml driven content for all websites, enabling content creators to create content independently of development. > Lead the use of CCS-driven new sites within the division, including an effective use of DOM, mainly through JavaScript/client-side code.> Working with the Group Internet Department in designing and developing the division's websites within OUP’s CMS.> Enhancing the accessibility of the division’s webpages to achieve higher web standard, and improving SEO (search engine optimization).> Supporting the division in the use of analytics through the use of multiple tools for tracking site traffic.> Developing new Flash-based multimedia resources for use within online products.
